Tuesday 9th February 2010 - Coca-Cola League One

Gillingham v Tranmere R

Kick-Off 7.45pm at Priestfield Stadium

Article Header - By Matthew Jones

Saturday was a huge blow in Tranmere's survival hopes as they suffered a confidence shattering 1-0 home defeat to local rivals and fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic.  Les Parry's side must however re-group for another huge match on Tuesday, that sees them take on Gillingham who are just three points above them in the table.

Rovers are now three points adrift of safety following Saturday's defeat, but Tuesday's away game in Kent gives them an opportunity to regain some confidence, play with fire and lift themselves a further place up the table.

Previous Meetings:

John Barnes' solitary home league win as Tranmere Rovers manager came over Gillingham as Rovers thrashed the Gills 4-2 at Prenton Park on a sunny August afternoon.

In a game that Tranmere took their chances and Gillingham didn't, Ian Thomas-Moore opened the scoring on five minutes as he headed in Logan's cross from close range, before Gillingham equalised half an hour later.

John Welsh scored his first goal for the club to regain the lead for Tranmere, a superb long range effort just after half-time, before Barcham pulled Gillingham level again just six minutes later.

Moore, Ian

Rovers manager John Barnes changed things around on the 70 minute mark, replacing Curran with Gornell, and it proved to be a good substitution as the striker netted his first of the season from outside the area just four minutes after coming on, before Ian Thomas-Moore completed the scoring in injury time to secure the game for Rovers and earn John Barnes his first points as Tranmere manager.

Vital Stats:

In fifteen trips to Gillingham, Tranmere have picked up just three wins, though they have only been defeated on four occasions, drawing eight matches

Rovers are unbeaten in their last three against the Gills

At least one side has scored two or more goals in the last ten games between these two sides

Tranmere have won just one of three Tuesday night games against Gillingham

The last time Tranmere played Gillingham away on a Tuesday night was during their relegation season from Division One

On This Day:

2008:  Ronnie Moore's Tranmere draw 1-1 at home to Leyton Orient thanks to a strike from Calvin Zola

2002:  Dave Watson's Tranmere lose 2-1 in front of 15,000 at Huddersfield, Paul Rideout scoring the Tranmere goal

1990:  John King's side hammer Birmingham City 5-1 at Prenton Park, a resulted that lifted them into the Division Three play-off places

Tranmere Rovers have played twelve previous fixtures on February 9th, picking up four wins, four draws and four defeats.  In these twelve games they have scored seventeen goals and conceded eighteen.

The Form Book:

Gillingham Last Six Home Games:  DDLWDW

Tranmere Last Six Away Games:  DLDLWD

Gillingham's home form this season has been strong, and it is only their disappointing and very poor away form that has left them lingering near the relegation zone in League One.  They have however in recent weeks been slipping closer to the relegation zone as Simeon Jackson's goals have dried up.

The Gills started their six match sequence with a 1-0 win over Burton Albion in the F.A. Cup thanks to a second half strike from Weston before drawing their next home game against Carlisle United 0-0.

Fellow relegation strugglers Stockport County were then heavily beaten at Priestfield, Oli, Brandy and Nutter scoring first half goals to give the side a 3-1 win, before in their next home game against local rivals Brentford, Gillingham lost 1-0.

Since this result, the Gills have picked up consecutive home draws, meaning they have actually won just one of their last five at home, and just once in their last twelve games in all competitions.

Firstly, the Gills drew 0-0 with high flying Colchester United before they repeated the result a week later against mid-table Walsall.

Other notable home results for the Gills include wins over Oldham (1-0), Millwall (2-0) and Swindon (5-0).

Prior to this fixture, Gillingham have played fourteen home games this season, picking up 26 of an available 42 points thanks to seven wins, five draws and two defeats.

Gillingham are in fact yet to win an away game this season, with their most impressive results being 1-1 draws with Norwich, Exeter and Harltepool United.

The Gills come into this game in 20th place in the League One table, though they are in fact level with 21st place Brighton on 29 points.  They have played 29 games so far this season and picked up those 29 of an available 87 points thanks to seven wins, eight draws and fourteen defeats.

Tranmere Rovers come into this game looking for their first away in the league for over four months, having not picked up an away victory since September and only picked up three away league draws whilst Les Parry has been in charge of the club.

However, they have showed signs of improving on the road in recent weeks, with a sturdier defence the backbone for a team that is determined to get out of the relegation battle.  If they are to succeed however, they must start to pick up more away wins, having got just one in the league this season.

Rovers started their six match sequence with a spectacular 3-3 draw with Huddersfield Town, with the Wirral side coming from behind three times to tie the match, Ian Moore, Craig Curran and Ash Taylor getting on the scoresheet for Les Parry's side, whilst a week later they progressed to the third round of the F.A. Cup thanks to a 2-1 away win against League Two side Aldershot Town.

Taylor Ash

Promotion hopefuls Southampton then hammered Rovers 3-0 at St. Marys, Rickie Lambert netting twice for the Saints, and in their next away game a month later Tranmere picked up a vital point thanks to a 0-0 draw at Oldham in what was a dire game.

Rovers did make it three away games without a goal in their next outing however as they were beaten 1-0 by Paul Ince's MK Dons, Jason Puncheon scoring the only goal of the match for the inconsistent Dons, but afer an excellent display Tranmere picked up an very good and well earnt point at the Valley in their most recent away fixture thanks to a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic.

Tranmere's only other notable result on the road this season was a 1-0 win at Wycombe courtesy of a Ian Moore goal when John Barnes was still in charge of the club.

Rovers come into this game having picked up just six of an available 42 points on the road this season, having won one, drawn three and lost ten of their eleven games away from home.

Notable results at Prenton Park for Tranmere this season include wins over Gillingham (4-2), Bristol Rovers (2-0), Yeovil Town (2-1) and Southend United (2-0).

Les Parry's side come into this match in 22nd place in the League One table, having played 28 games and picked up 26 of an available 84 points, thanks to six wins, four draws and ffifteen defeats.

Double Hit:

Current Rovers striker Bas Savage endured a hugely unsuccessful spell at Gillingham during the 2006/07 season, as he made fifteen appearances for the Gills, scored just one goal and became somewhat of a hate figure for the Gillingham fans.

Prior to his spell at Gillingham, Savage had indeed been unsuccessful at most of his clubs.  He came through the youth ranks at Reading, spent time on loan at Bury and Wycombe and signed permanently for Bristol City, but in total he netted just one goal in 51 appearances for the four clubs.

Following his spell at Gillingham, Savage moved to Brighton and Hove Albion, where his career finally kicked off and he began to find some form that would make him a striker feared by League One defenders.

It's at Brighton where Savage made his famous Michael Jackson moonwalking celebration, picked up by Soccer AM and showed by the Sky Sports programme whenever he managed to get on the scoresheet.

The Londoner netted ten goals in 42 games for the Seagulls, a decent record the lured him away from the Withdean Stadium on a free transfer to Millwall in February 2008.

Savage however barely lasted five months at the New Den though, as his form again began to hit a rut, with Savage netting just twice in eleven games.
Colchester Uniteds Marc Tierney and Tranmere Rovers Bas Savage

Following his release in July 2008, Ronnie Moore took a gamble on the striker, bringing him to Tranmere on a two-year contract.  The gamble paid off, as Savage proved to be one of the most important players in a Tranmere team that finished seventh in the League One table.

He may have only netted nine goals in his 49 games for the club, but it was aspects of his game elsewhere that impressed most, such as his confident swagger, excellent first touch and good aireal ability.

However, sadly for Bas, he has yet to play first team football this season after twice rupturing his achillies in mid-2009.  He is however well on the comeback trail and should make his return to the first team within the next few weeks.

One To Watch:  Simeon Jackson

A pacey striker well capable of scoring goals, Simeon Jackson hit the headlines early on this season when he scored a hatrick on the opening day of the season when the Gills beat Swindon Town 5-0.

Since then, the two teams have gone in somewhat different directions, with Swindon battling for promotion and Gillingham struggling to beat the drop, but Jackson's form has remained consistent, with the striker netting fourteen times so far this season, though he has scored just once in his last nine matches.

Jackson hails from non-League football, where he had a hugely successful time at Rushden and Diamonds, even playing briefly for the side whilst they were in the Football League.

Making his debut during the 2004/05 season, Jackson, from Canada, was with Rushden for four years before joining Gillingham for an undisclosed fee on deadline day in August 2008.

He had made 93 appearances for the Diamonds and scored 42 goals, 41 of those goals coming over his final two seasons with the club!

Since making the move to Priestfield, Jackson has been hugely successful and has become a firm fan favourite because of his goalscoring exploits.  With explosive pace and deadly finishing from inside the box have seen him score 39 goals for the club, having made 100 appearances, an impressive record for a striker at any level.

Standing at just 5'05, Jackson may be small, but he is a constant threat and will have to be marked closely by Rovers' backline, particularly those who possess pace, such as Taylor and Logan.

Jackson wears the numbers ten shirt for the Gills.

League One Fixtures:

There are only four fixtures in League One on Tuesday evening, with these games only taking place as the original fixtures were postponed due to the terrible weather in January.

Brighton vs. Huddersfield
Bristol Rovers vs. Walsall
Gillingham vs. Tranmere
Swindon vs. Oldham

There is also a fixture on Monday evening however, as Colchester United host Southend United, who appear to be slipping towards the relegation zone, in what will no doubt be a fierce local derby played live on Sky Television.

Team News:

Following Saturday's disappointing defeat, Les Parry is likely to make changes for this game, with Marvin Sordell, currently on-loan from Watford, most to come into the starting XI following his debut on Saturday.

Bakayogo Zoumana

Zoumana Bakayogo could return following a one match suspension for a red card picked up at Charlton, meaning Aaron Cresswell would drop back to the bench, whilst Gareth Edds could start in midfield and there could be a place on the bench for sriker Kithson Bain.

Jones' Prediction:  Gillingham 1-1 Tranmere

I think Tranmere will set their stall out to defend in this game, and if they can pick up a point then it would be a decent result against a side who have a very strong home form.

Rovers need though to remember to attack and take the game to the Gills.  They did this at Charlton last weekend, they got the ball down and played with it, and it showed what they could do and what they're capable of.  It made them look like a good team who were capable of beating a top side like Charlton.

Les Parry will have his team fired up for this game after Saturday's dismal effort and there's no doubt that they will play with much more passion than they did in their last outing.  If they can fight hard and take the game to Gillingham, play with no fear, then there is no reason why they cannot pick up a point, or more.

Their defence has been strong, both at home and on the road for some time now, so it's just a case of Rovers taking their chances in front of goal, a point that has been reiterated for several weeks now.  With new signing Sordell in, hopefully not only will he add some goals to the attack, but also perhaps motivate the likes of Gornell and Curran to play better as their place in the side is now under threat.

(Sm42)Let's hope there's a positive reaction to the rubbish served up on Saturday; Sordell plays from the start and we nick it 1-0.

A draw is of no use at all. I say that in respect of it being said that a draw there would be good.
As far as I am concerned, this is the last chance and if they lose they will go down.
Parry is too laid back for me for a man in his position, but then, he'll still have a job where a pucker manager would be out of work.
All out attack and nothing else.

You really don't understand football do you? We will NOT go down if we lose tonight, nor if we draw. A win doesn't mean we'll stay up either. After tonight, there will still be 51 points to play for, though apparently even if we're just six behind the teams above us we'll go down. Work that one out.

But we have to have some sense of realism too to be fair......

If we do lose tonight we have to get 24 points from the remaining 17 games.

Not impossible by any means but a tall order for a team picking up points at the rate we are and performing the way we are.

What I will say as well though is that it's the same for five or six teams around us too.

My reason for feeling we may eventually go down is that the results we need such as beating Oldham at home etc just aren't coming BUT as Matt says if by some chance we win tonight things look a lot different.

Even a draw tonight would be a positive at least I suppose.

Moaning to the extent of above posts isn't going to help but some sense or reality is also needed I feel.

I am not moaning. People just don't grasp that if we go down we will be there for a hell of a long time.
Nothing is happening but some still rely on games left to play but what does that mean if there is nothing there in the dressing room ?
Parry looks to Backayago as well he might for he seems one who wants to get forward,
Parry said he tells his assistants what he wants!
What's he told the Chief ?

I was so depressed after Saturday - mainly about the absolute lack of purpose going forward. The team seemed to have no meaningful plan or tactic for getting the ball forward or creating chances (apart from tw@tting it forward aimlessly that is). I really thought at one stage that I was watching part-timers such was the lack of ideas in that side and thats why I fear for us this season. If Parry can't instill some way of playing, even if its ugly, then we'll definately go down.

I just hope the new lad from Watford and Charlie Barnett get a start against Gillingham because they showed a bit of creativity on Saturday. I'd also bring Mahon and Bain back in because these are players with a bit of craft who may be able to fashion the odd chance for us. Curran and Gornell, for all their running are just not effective and why "set piece specialist" Mclaren ever gets a start is just beyond me.

Thats it.

charlie has no effort he didnt look bothered when he came on my team would be 433
daniels
zoom taylor goodison logan
welsh shuker edds
moore gornel sorrel

for me it would be a could attacking team shuker edds push up and welsh tends to play a defencive mid role and i think we need to give bain a run out see what he can do

You're quite right about Gornell and especially Curran. for all their effort, they cannot hit the net. Match after match they fail to score. I would drop them and tell them to prove themselves back in the Reserves. You're right too about McClaren, he is very ineffective.

(Sm22) You are jokinh right?

He came on and within 30 seconds, bang. He'd made a tackle with passion and determination to win the ball that none of the others had shown in the whole 90 minutes. He then got down the wing a few times, a nice one-two with Sordell and we'd created a chance.

Your comment about him not looking bothered is unbelievable. He was our bright spark in that game and changed it for us, created the few chances we had and looked a danger.

As for ivvy, you've no idea what seems to have happened to the club over the last 10 months. You may of noticed that, in June our club was stabbed when we employed two incapable people. They destroyed what we had and effectively set us up for relegation. They averaged 0.76 pts per game. Eventually (but probably too late) they were removed and we appointed a Phsyio, due to the fact no one else wanted the job/we couldn't afford them. He has since improved our fortunes and averged 1.3 pts per game. He has turned around what was a relegation team to one which would accumalte 59 points over the season if he averaged that total for the 46 games. Easily mid-table. So yeah, our physio Les has improved us no end with limited resources and a cr@p squad. He can only work with whats given too him remember..

As for staying up Mike, if we need 24 pts from 17 games, well if we continued our average of 1.3 pts we'd get another 22 points over the season. So there's no reason we can't stay up IMO.

As Matt said, if we lose we lose, if we draw we draw, if we win we win, but no matter what the outcome that won't be the reason we get relagated if we do. You can't single this game out. What about the run of six straight defeats early on in the season? That had a major influence, rather than this game alone.

he was that much of a bright spark the game didnt change !
he is only at this club because no one else wanted him he would have gone to the championship otherwise he had a great 6months and you think he brilliant just like everyone though bout curran after being on the pitch for 3 miniutes look how that turned out hes banging them, in i wish

No, I don't think Charlie is brilliant. Quite clearly he has an attitude problem and after Hartlepool away he was quite rightly dropped.

However I said to Mike at ht on Sat I'd like to see him be brought on. He got his chance and he did well. He changed the game in the sense that he brought passion, determination and creativity that had been missing.. not in the sense that he scored 6 goals.
