Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County - Match Discussion Thread
By Total Tranmere
October 12 2009
Throughout the season we will provide you with a platform to discuss each and every Rovers match whether it be the build-up to kick-off or post match analysis so here we bring you the Match Discussion Thread for tonight's Coca Cola League One match at home to Stockport County........

Article Header - Match Discussion

Tranmere v Stockport C

Kick-Off 7.45pm at Prenton Park

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the high number of costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match anaylsis.

Stadium Tranmere (Night)

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game.

Tranmere of course host Stockport County tonight in Coca Cola League One in a game which is Live on Sky TV, so if you're not going to the game but are watching on TV from afar, why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on.

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores in Coca-Cola League One as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

So a few of the changes the fans wanted have come in:

Gornell 4 Ricketts
Edds 4 Welsh (although would prefer mclaren)

Also

Mahon 4 Carole, not just JB not rating Barnett
Bagasomething 4 Cresswell, not a surprise Cressa been pretty underwhelming this season
Curran 4 Shuker, bit surprised at this one

After watchin that id be surprised if we arent in Div 2 next season...no luck ,all 50/50s went the other way, although we are our own worst enemies, cant string more than 2 passes together especially coming out of defence, if we werent hoofing the ball we were passing to them....penalty was a penalty but not a sending off as Goodison was right next to the player so keeper wasnt last man,so ref made another balls up there, we only started to look like a proper team after we went 1 down ,Baba played in a good few crosses but Curran had no luck ,most of the time we pumped high balls up the pitch but when u dont have tall strikers whats the sense ? Im off for another coffee and be headin to work soon ,was good to see the Rovers live for a change wish they had got somethin out of it tho thumbs up

Was Mclaren on the field? I do not remember him touching the ball.Plenty of huff but no class anywhere and as always niaive defending showed that we will always give goals away and with no real strikers the season is taking on a pattern

The first half was a huge improvement on the last few weeks. We were much more organised, the players looked calmer on the ball, and we did really well - created some good chances and limited theirs. The second half was a different story, we were slow starting, in fact until they scored we never got going.

Thought the referee was awful (not judging on penalty decision at all btw) - but after that penalty he never gave us anything at all, and the linesman main stand side was absolutely awful!

The defence was improved, Bakayogo added pace, good at heading and crossing but his touch lets him down so much! Nice to see Eddsy back as well, he's so committed its a shame we can't have a team of Eddsy's and ITM's! McLaren was poor as usual. Gornell made a real difference to.

Curran got into some good positions but his finishing is absolutely atrocious, he should of had four or five goals tonight with ease.

Finally, Mahon. Signing of the season? Nah, terrible again, needs a kick up the backside.

Just finished watching that on Sky Sports and while I'm dissapointed at another loss I thought it was a good performance with a few positives.

A pretty even, end to end, first half. Stockport started the second the better team and we battled well after the penalty. Thought the ref made the right decision awarding the penalty and unfortunately had to send Daniels off. Can't proportion blame on the lad though, he was left alone and had to make an attempt to get the ball.

Edds and Logan had a good first half but dissapeared in the second in my opinion.

Goodison and Broomes were relatively solid today and battled well, but both at fault for the ball that crept through leading to the penalty and Daniels' red card.

Bakayogo was my Tranmere man of the match. Good at both ends and great delivery which deserved better results (if only the Chief could have made an appearance eh).

Mahon is not the gem we had back during those memorable cup runs and just didn't shine for me.

McLaren seemed lazy and his passing was often wayward and sloppy.

Curran has not proved to be the next big thing as was expected and dissapointed me today. Should have done better with his two headed efforts.

I was expecting big things of Gornell from what I've heard. I appreciate he is young but he showed me nothing today to suggest he has what it takes to be the striker we have been dreaming of.

Thomas-Moore is still full of effort and works hard, but again not a prolific goalscorer.

My overall opinion; a good battling performance but no killer punch in the final third. Could have done with a big man up front who may have done better with the number of headed efforts we had. There was a period where the team seemed to lose shape and all organisation and no one seemed to grab the bull by the horns and sort it out. Maybe we lack a real leader on the pitch? But the team battled hard after the penalty and I really thought we were going to get something out of the game. A bit of a disaster allowing that long ball creep through which ended up undoing the effort of the lads and putting us at a disadvantage of being 10 men down and a goal behind. I'm still baffled by Barnett's omission, he has more energy and a similar array of passing (only better placed) than McLaren. Could hear the fans getting behind the team on the telly too (well done to those of you who were there). Tranmere man of the match: Bakayogo. Overall man of the match: Baker (Stockport).

After watching that game I am extremely low. Too many players are not good enough on that evidence. What on earth was Broomes doing letting the ball drop for thier goal? His distribution is awful and I would replace him with ash. Mahon was woeful, Curran's finishing is a living disgrace as well.

We are nearly cut adrift now, that was a very costly defeat. The new manager has got a right job on his hands keeping us up.

Just back from the game a dissapointing defeat.
BUT for the first time this season some shape!! also a lot of good effort from the lads.

I do feel thought that while people keep moaning about the hoof! we need to use it more!!! too many time mclaren etc... caught passing it around the back allowing them to press up. We are not good enough for total football if you want to see that go to Barcelona.

Bakayogo his debut and on tv i feared the worst but trying his heart out a quality cross and with a few games could be great for us, also adding some height!

Edds our best centre mid by a mile, the ground that lad covers is awesome! Got stuck in and supported the front 2 when he could THER'S ONLY ONE GARETH EDDS!!!

Goodison making some crucial blocks etc... tonight and looked like the class defender we're going to need now.

Alan Mahon-I really wish some of you guys would lay off the lad, he has that bit of quality which he showed at times but with his lack of games coupled with the rumour he's carrying an injury i thought he battled well for us!

Referee-Haven't seen the penalty on tv yet but his handling of the game itself with his assistants? was dire, one sided and a total discrace!!

Fans-again too many who don't get behind the team, 4 minutes of added time and it was like a library!!! we need to start making some noise start to finish and lift the team.

Overall a lot more positives than recent weeks and this coupled with a good manager and some strong backing from the fans will result in our survival.

Didn't think much changed to be honest. A bold move by Les to go with the 4-3-3 and for the first half it made a bit of difference but the same lack of desire and defensive shakiness was clear to see.

We only lost to a penalty of course but Stockport looked woeful and another team would have made it yet another 3 or 4 goal defeat.

Thought we looked a little more composed to be honest, think are main problem is central midfield,no effort from Mclaren and welsh they be dropped if i was gaffa.Thought we were unlucky thought we deserved a win not a lose,As for the penalty did not see it from the paddock if it was.I would have changed it second half got the ball down the flanks and put ricketts on, thought if we were going to get a goal thats where it may have come from.

Danny Wilson in the stands also tonight

I thought it was a much better performance than what we've seen in recent weeks. I thought there was more comittment and desire to win the ball in 50/50 situations. I think Bakayogo looked promising and agree that Edds had a superb game - man of the match for me tonight. I think the sending off was very harsh and Luke was devastated in the tunnel just after he'd been sent off. Although disappointed with the result, I thought there was a massive improvement in the performance. Not saying it was perfect by any stretch of the imagination but a good effort with respect to the turbulent week the players/staff have had.

It was utterly dreadful.
The only people that saw an improvement were the boo boys.
Although we've had some big defeats this year, in terms of losing to poor opposition, this was the worst defeat of the season.
Had we lost this game with Barnes at the helm people would have started burning effigies.

Anyway that is the last time I will mention Barnes. I am going to show some class and put what is in the past in the past.
I am just astonished at the mad nature of some peoples opinions.
I'm going to bed to dream of the 2nd division. To be honest the whole season's brought out the worst in everyone.

Onwards and upwards.

They weren't that bad a team, there movement was pretty decent to be fair.

Equally you could also says it's only Barnes fan club that saw no improvement..

We were just more organised and it showed, especially in the first half where we really limited there chances. We had a shape, unlike recent weeks. We did become slightly harder to beat - we never conceeded from open play for a start! Long may that continue!

In my 38 years in Australia it was the first time I've seen Tranmere on television 'live'. This is only the second time this has ever happened. The first was the 2000 Wembley League Cup Final, but I travelled over to see that game. I've been over 6 times in the last 10 years for holidays and watched a number of games in those years. I've read all the posts on this site this season and I thought that surely the Rovers couldn't be as bad as people were saying. Now I've seen it with my own eyes, I couldn't believe how bad and dis-organised the team is. Apart from the Moore header in the first half, I don't think the forwards won or even looked interested in winning a 'contested' header. I was surprised at the lack of passing and control of the ball and very disappointed at the big-boot tactics. Cadburygorilla says Goodison made some good blocks, he should watch the game again, it was more good-luck than judgement. Goodison is miles too slow and lazy. Broomes gives no confidence either. Mahon and McLaren are major disappointments. Logan is not a right-back, there will be holes there for the opposition all day. Edds tries hard and Bakayogo looked promising. I was hoping my first post wouldn't be negative.

pete if you thought that was unorganised its a good job you didn't see leeds away!!! to say goodisons tackles/blocks are luck is ridiculous.

I am sick of people laying into players who have given their all to the club and ARE good players. ITM-Goodison-Mahon-Shuker etc... deserve a lot more support than they're getting off our 'fans'.

Certain players are giving their all but until we start winning, none of them are really going to get any respect or praise and rightly so in my opinion.

The problem with Mahon is that he suspiciously got a 3 year, massive wage deal (compared with rest of team) and he hasn't performed to the level he is capable of, certainly in compeitive games. He's not gonna have a blinder every week, but he can do a lot better. The whole team ain't playing great but he probably is the best player quality wise in our squad, and he just ain't performed. As one of the more experienced heads in the dressing room it'd be nice to see him lead by example. On the bright side he ain't been injured yet! smiling smiley

My view too. I saw a geat hole at the back with old man Goodison a mile out of where he should be, in the box.

There was nothing there and a team with strikers and a bit of pace will see more hammerings.

My first post since I got banned from the Cowsheds, after the game first observation I thought S'port were woeful, and a better side would have again exposed defence, good to see defenders getting forward (even Mcclaren 2nd half like he used too) but left the back sparse, Goody a couple of times got forward but there was no chance he'd get back and didn't seem willing. When I first saw the side I was disapointed to see the attack, 3 or 4 lads trying to get through the middle again and no width at all ! don't think any research had been done ! Shuker, Carole and Rickets would have battered them they were so inept, felt for Curren, should have done better a few times, but deserves credit for getting in to possition, Felt to for TG thrown in there and hope be bounces back.
As has been posted laods of huff and puff but should have done better, sad to hear the Boo Boys on the Kop (good to hear the Boro road in Voice) again. I love LP and SG and hope that they don't become the villians to the boo boys, and some appreciation is shown for the situation they are in

This is an interesting thread with a variety of opinions. Just in response to a few;

Eric - there was clearly an improvement on previous weeks. I've been sat at games this season, both home and away where I've thought we've given possession away far too easily by not committing into 50/50 tackles. Last night, there was far less of that in my opinion and the players looked as though they were giving it a go.

Aussiepete - I can only echo what others have said and say if you had of seen more matches this season then this was a clear improvement. However, if you expecting a performance similar to previous seasons were we were able to conjure up goals out of half chances and grind a result out, then I appreciate you thought it was a poor performance but for me there seemed a lot more effort, which leads onto my next point.

Sub - I disagree. I think if a player gives it their all, then they deserve respect. Football is a result business, agreed and we are in a terrible position, agreed. However a defeat like last night, where I think the players battled well throughout, is much more easy to swallow than a game like, say Leeds or Charlton where there was little effort, little commitment and no shape. I also thought the game had a draw written all over it until the penalty and I think we're unfortunate to not have come away with a point. I don't think either team did enough to deserve to win the game.

As I said, a good thread!
