Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could be out of action for months after initial scans showed a suspected fractured eye socket.
The injury was sustained in a challenge by Emile Heskey.
The injury to Mignolet leaves the Black Cats with only one fit senior goalkeeper in Republic of Ireland international Keiren Westwood. Trevor Carson, out on loan, is also injured.
Talk of an emergency loan of Man Utd's Tomasz Kuszack has been shot down. The emergency loan rule only comes into play when all senior players in that position are out of action.
Kieren Westwood is fit so Sunderland do not qualify on that front meaning one of the youngsters is likely to make it to the bench when Steve Bruce returns to his old stomping ground to face Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United at Old Trafford.
