Three big winners in SPL at weekend

Celtic, Motherwell and Dunfermline were big winners in the SPL this weekend, at both the top and bottom of the SPL.

Before the weekend there were four teams in the running for third place in the SPL and the second Champions League spot, and they were all playing each other.

First up was Dundee United at home to Hearts, with United knowing a win would move them above Motherwell ahead of their game with St. Johnstone later in the afternoon.

It looked good for United as they were 2-1 up heading into the closing stages, but a late goal from Novikovas, with a left foot wonder strike saw them drop two points. This gave a chink of light to Motherwell as they kicked off their game with the Perth Saints.

It appeared to inspire the Steelmen as they rattled up give goals with only one in response, and at the same time recorded their highest League win of the season. Chris Humphrey’s potential call up forJamaicaseemed to inspire the winger as he tore Saints apart.

Michael Higdon opened the scoring with a penalty, with goals being added from Murphy, Law and a double from Ojamme with Saints only notching through a Craig penalty.

This moved Motherwell five points ahead with three games to go, and almost sealed a Europa League place, and leaves them in the driving seat for the Champions League place.

Either this is a tremendous achievement for one of the smallest clubs in the top flight.

Celtic saw off Ranges with ease on Sunday in a game played in the right spirit and a deal of humour off the pitch. Although on the part of Rangers fans it was a black sense of humour with Ally McCoist saying afterwards he fears liquidation may be the only way out of their troubles.

That on its own will open another can of worms….

At the other end of the table,Dunfermlinewon their first home game of the season, and moved to within three points of Hibs in the battle to stave off relegation. This seemed to put the wind up theEdinburghside who fell to defeat atPaisleyon Sunday.

The next two weeks will be a test of the spirit in the Hibs camp as they have to prepare for battle on two fronts with a Cup Final looming after the SPL season finishes. It will be interesting to see if they can concentrate on the fight for relegation with that big carrot dangling at the end of it all.

It could be a winner take all clash at Easter Rd on Monday 7th May when the two of them face up to each other.
