Anfield, Liverpool

LIVERPOOL 0 BOLTON WANDERERS 2

An exciting and uplifting game and result. Then Second Division Bolton led 2-0 at Burnden to Cup holders Liverpool before two lucky late goals scraped the Reds a replay. In the replay John McGinlay gave Bolton the lead with a great header from a superb David Lee cross to send the 9,000 Whites in the Anfield Road and Centenary Stands in to raptures. Andy Walker extended the lead after McGinlay crossed it for Walker to finish and promptly silenced the onlooking Kop.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 0 BOLTON WANDERERS 2 A shock result with giant killing Wanderers defeating First Division Wolves on their home patch. Wanderers utility man Scott Green, who nearly joined Wolves as a boy, gave Bolton the lead before Super John McGinlay began his 'special' relationship with the Wolves fans by scoring the second and delivering another exciting and proud win.

BOLTON WANDERERS 1 PRESTON NORTH END 0

The game that finally clinched promotion out of the Second Division and relegated Lancashire rivals Preston to Division Three. Bolton had been in the top three all season before moving in to second place above Port Vale in the last few weeks of the season. A nervous game was settled by a John McGinlay penalty who fired it past former White Simon Farnworth to spark scenes of jubilation at a sell out Burnden.

Goodison Park, Liverpool

EVERTON 2 BOLTON WANDERERS 3 (AET)

A 1-1 draw at Burnden set Bolton up for a replay at Goodison. In the replay, Everton were two Stuart Barlow goals to the good before John McGinlay pulled one back and then boyhood Toffee Alan Stubbs equalised to take the game in to extra time. The winner was an absolute pearler from Eire international Owen Coyle as he cut inside and curled the winner past Neville Southall and give Bolton a fitting victory.

FA Cup 4th Round Replay 1993/94

ARSENAL 1 BOLTON WANDERERS 3 (AET)

Owen Coyle earned Bolton a lucrative replay after making it 2-2 with only minutes remaining in the first game after Jason McAteer had given Bolton the lead before Ian Wright then Tony Adams scored for the Gunners. In the replay, John McGinlay headed home a corner from six yards after David Lee's twenty five yard thunderbolt was pushed away for a corner. Alan Smith equalised to take it in to extra time before Eire international Jason McAteer gave Bolton an extra time lead and Andy Walker made it safe with five minutes left on the clock.

BOLTON WANDERERS 1 ASTON VILLA 0

Chances came and went for Bolton in the live TV Sunday FA Cup clash as Jimmy Phillips rattled Villa's bar and then Tony Kelly almost beat Mark Bosnich with a free kick. It looked to be heading for another replay before Alan Stubbs strode forward and struck a twenty yard free kick past Bosnich with only eight minutes left.

League Cup Final 1994/95

LIVERPOOL 2 BOLTON WANDERERS 1

Bolton were torn apart by a world class performance from youngster Steve McManaman who scored two superb goals for Liverpool. Despite this, goal of the game went to Wanderers' winger Alan Thompson who equalised with a magnificent 25 yard volley on the turn.

BOLTON WANDERERS 2 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 0 (AET)

A night of drama and passion was plain for all to see at a Burnden Park crammed to the rafters. John McGinlay equalised on aggregate late in normal time and then gave Bolton the lead and a place in the Play-Off Final with a goal in extra time and Burnden had not rocked as much since the promotion game in 92/93 against Preston after manager Bruce Rioch pleaded with the Bolton public to get down to fortress Burnden and raise the roof.

READING 3 BOLTON WANDERERS 4 (AET)

One of the most exciting games ever to take place on these shores, let alone in a major cup final. After twenty minutes it seemed Bolton were down and out, 2-0 down after goals from Adrian Williams and Stuart Lovell and Bolton conceded a penalty. Up stepped Simon Osborn who's shot was brilliantly saved by Keith Branagan and that gave Bolton the confidence to come back. Owen Coyle pulled one back just after the hour mark before substitute Fabian De Freitas equalised in stoppage time to take the game in to extra time. Mixu Paatelainen then gave Bolton the lead for the first time in extra time before De Freitas scored his second to make it 4-2 with barely five minutes left. Veteran striker Jimmy Quinn pulled one back for the Royals in the last minute of extra time but fortunately it was too little too late and Bolton returned to the top flight after a fifteen year absence.

BOLTON WANDERERS 2 BLACKBURN ROVERS 1

This was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal season, a win in the Lancashire derby over deadly rivals and reigning champions Blackburn Rovers. Fabian De Freitas gave Bolton the lead before Matt Holmes equalised with his first goal for Rovers and then Alan Stubbs scored a header and Burnden erupted.

BOLTON WANDERERS 6 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1

Another incredible night of giant killing was to be had at Burnden where Premier League Spurs were lambs to the slaughter with Whites legend John McGinlay scoring a hat trick and assisting two on his way to collecting the man of the match award.

MANCHESTER CITY 1 BOLTON WANDERERS 2

It was an emotional rollercoaster for all the Wanderers fans on this April evening. City's Georgi Kinkladze gave his the lead with a superb free kick fired past Branagan before substitute Mixu Paatelainen, on for the injured John McGinlay, equalised with a towering header to send the Bolton hordes behind the goal wild before Scott Sellars scored an absolutely brilliant goal which clinched the Division One Championship for Bolton with Sellars beating five defenders before firing past Tommy Wright in the City goal.

BOLTON WANDERERS 4 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 1

This was an emotion filled night at a sold out Burnden for the last game at the famous old ground. Charlton took a shock lead before natural order was restored after half time. Fittingly Wanderers modern day legend John McGinlay had the honour of scoring the last ever goal at Burnden Park.

The first game at the new £40million Reebok Stadium was marred by a header from Gerry Taggart which crossed the line but failed to be acknowledged by the officials and was later proved by TV replays to have crossed the line. This tarred Bolton's season and ultimately decided their relegation from the Premiership, ironically instead of opponents Everton.

This win was Bolton's first really emphatic win at the Reebok and was made all the more sweeter as it was over local rivals Bury.

BOLTON WANDERERS 3 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 0

A great performance to match that of the 1st Leg when Bolton snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat. WBA effectively gave up after Gudni Bergsson gave Bolton an early lead before the victory was sealed late on on an emotionally charged night at the Reebok.

A vitally important promotion which earned Bolton an estimated 30million and virtually saved them from bankruptcy. Gareth Farrelly gave Bolton an early lead with a superb strike from the edge of the area. Preston were never really in the game and only real chance was foiled by a world class save from on-loan goalkeeper Matt Clarke. Michael Ricketts and then Ricardo Gardner sealed the win and sent the 23,000 Whites present in to dreamland.

FA Premier League 2001/02

LEICESTER CITY 0 BOLTON WANDERERS 5

A superb opening win announced Bolton's return to the Premiership in style. Two goals each from Per Frandsen and Kevin Nolan and a stormer from Michael Ricketts emphatically gave Bolton the win and dumbfounded critics and pundits alike.

BOLTON WANDERERS 2 LIVERPOOL 1

This win showed that Bolton could hold their own in the harsh world of the Premiership. Michael Ricketts gave Bolton the lead after a well worked corner before Emile Heskey equalised just after half time. Bolton had the last laugh though, Dean Holdsworth's speculative 25 yarder slipped underneath Reds 'keeper Sander Westerveld and virtually ended the Dutch stopper's career at Anfield. The win meant that Bolton had won all three of their opening matches on their return to the Premiership which saw them sitting pretty at the top of the Premiership table as September arrived.

FA Premier League 2001/02

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 BOLTON WANDERERS 2

A magnificent, long awaited victory over local rivals and current champions Manchester United was sealed in front of an estimated 5,000 Bolton fans despite being allocated only 3,000 tickets. Juan Sebastien Veron gave United the lead with a 35 yard thunderbolt before Kevin Nolan scored a Goal of the Month volley to equalise in front of the Stretford End just before half time. Bolton dominated the second half and should've had a penalty after Per Frandsen was fouled but Michael Ricketts calmly finished past Fabien Barthez with less that fifteen minutes left after capitalising on a Wes Brown mistake.
