Bolton opened the scoring after only two minutes when Youri Djorkaeff played a great through ball to Henrik Pedersen who fired it home for his first goal of the season. However, not the first time this season Bolton were pegged back barely a minute after scoring themselves when Harry Kewell crossed the ball in for controversial England striker Alan Smith to fire the ball high past Jaaskelainen. Both teams had their moments in the first half but both were pretty even and the half time of score 1-1 was about right.
There weren't many chances at the start of the second half, with both sides only having a couple of half chances. Kevin Nolan wasted a golden opportunity when he headed wide following great work out wide by full back Simon Charlton. Nolan then missed a chance barely a couple of minutes later when he again got behind the defence but put the ball over when trying to curl it past the goalkeeper. Leeds then went up the other end and Viduka just missed after Ivan Campo slipped and Viduka got the ball from Harry Kewell. Djorkaeff curled a free kick over the goal. Henrik Pedersen ran past the defence and fired a great shot only for it to hit the inside of the post and into Paul Robinson’s arms before Bernard Mendy then had a chance but only won a corner. Djorkaeff had a shot cleared before Leeds broke away only for Alan Smith to give a free kick. Bolton then again took the lead when great play and pressure from Bolton was rewarded when Youri Djorkaeff placed the ball into the net after a great one-two. Leeds equalised a few minutes later when Ivan Campo slipped for the umpteenth time in the game to let in Harry Kewell to score. Djorkaeff almost scored barely five minutes from the end when he connected perfectly with a cross from substitute Michael Ricketts only to be stopped by a breathtaking save by Paul Robinson. Ricketts then won a penalty when he raced onto a pass and was brought down by Paul Robinson. Ricketts picked himself up to score the resulting penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way. Henrik Pedersen then clinched a deserved victory when he volleyed home with his left foot to send the visiting supporters wild.
