Wanderers had to battle against not only the constant pressure but also a referee that must have had a home win down on his coupon as he gave several debatable decisions in the favour of the home side.
Arsenal had a chance to take the lead when a penalty was given following a foul by Gudni Bergsson on Thierry Henry. However, Henry failed to capitalise on the opportunity and his poor penalty hit the post to keep Bolton in the game. Henry then had another chance before he finally gave Arsenal the lead to equal Chesterfield’s record of scoring in forty-six consecutive games.
Gareth Farrelly, in his first start of the season, then scored a shock equaliser for Bolton within ninety seconds of the start of the second half.
Arsenal then got a shock lead though when a long ball in the last minute was nodded down by Henry, who possibly fouled Bergsson, for Kanu to toe the ball home to give Arsenal all three points.
