An Alex Lurinsky goal in the 85th minute salvaged a point for the Blues in the opening match of the season against Raith Rovers. Raith took the lead in the first half through Carrigan. More details to follow.

RAITH ROVERS

1-1

STRANRAER

Carrigan (36, pen)
(1-0)
Lurinsky (85)

Stranraer were never outplayed in this match, and only found themselves a goal down because of a poor decision by the referee. However, the Blues left it until the 85th minute before scoring the equaliser.

Both teams started the match cautiously and it was not until the 16th minute that the first real scoring chance fell to Allan Jenkins. Ian Harty slipped the ball through to Jenkins, but his shot was aimed straight at the keeper who easily parried it to set up Raith with a scoring attempt of their own. Hampshire's free-kick narrowly went over the bar from 30 yards out.

Jenkins squandered a chance in the 20th minute when Kevin Finlayson's touch-cross fell at the feet of the midfielder, but his shot went wide.

In the 36th minute Raith took the lead through a poor decision by referee Freeland . Derek Wingate clearly made contact with the ball in the penalty box, but Argentinean Martin Prest fell like a sack of potatoes. The resulting spot-kick by Carrigan sent McCulloch the wrong way and the Blues found themselves a goal down.

Stranraer picked up the pressure in the last five minutes of the half and almost drew level after Kevin Finlayson crossed from the left and picked out Steven Renicks at the edge of the box. The midfielder's header hit the top side of the bar and went out for a corner.

On the stroke of half-time Finlayson again crossed the ball into the box, to be met by an unmarked Lee Sharpe. The ex-Ayr player could not control his header and it went wide.

In the second half both teams tried to break through, but it was not until a double substitution, with Grace and Lurinsky coming on, in the 58th minute that Stranraer looked threatening again.

Finlayson was causing continuious problems down the wing and this time he found Ian Harty, and with a beautiful backpass he set up Alex Grace who was rushing to the edge of the box. Grace blasted the ball over the bar.

With the time running out Stranraer finally drew level through substitute Lurinsky. Lee Sharpe took a shot at goal, but it was punched by Odjeda only as far as Lurinsky. His half-volley crashed against the underside of the bar and went in

Martin Prest thought Odjeda had been fouled and decided to tell the referee so. This earned the Argentinean his second yellow card and an automatic red. However, he was reluctant to leave the fields and picked up a third yellow card, before finally going; his pay packet will be smaller this week.

Man of the Match: Kevin Finlayson. Despite not getting on the score sheet Kevin set up many of Stranraer's chances.
