Stranraer finally took over top spot in the division after a crushing defeat against Montrose. A win looked to be on the cards prior the kickoff, as Stranraer had demonstrated three times before this season, but few fans in the 504 strong crowd would have predicted a 6-0 scoreline.
The match was only five minutes old when David Graham gave the Blues the lead after gathering a long pass from Michael Moore, and firing the ball low and hard into the goal.
Graham had another chance on the half hour mark when his ten yard effort was expertly saved by Butter in the Montrose goal.
In the 34th minute Stranraer scored their second goal when a Lee Sharp corner was headed into the net by Murray Henderson.
Montrose started the second half well and looked like they might have a good chance of taking something from the match. However, when the Blues added to their tally, Montrose resistance crumbled.
The Loons most dangerous player at the start of the half was Scott Michie. Michie gave the Stranraer defence a headache in the 48th minute when he slipped past his marker and struck the ball into the side netting.
Minutes later it was Michie again who tested Andy McCondichie. The striker found space at the edge of the box and his powerful shot was tipped around the upright for a corner by the 'keeper.
Montrose's short rally then faltered when the Stranraer midfield settled down. In the 52nd minute Michael Moore failed to connect with a David Graham cross that skimmed across the face of the goal.
Stephen Swift finally got Stranraer's third goal in the 57th minute with a diving header. The ball hit the post, then Butter before rolling over the line.
Seven minutes later Michael Moore added yet another goal to his impressive tally for the season. A Lee Sharp corner was headed goalward by a Montrose defender and Butter was forced to punch the ball clear. However, he only succeeded in passing the ball to Moore six yards out, who then volleyed it into the net.
The Blues were beginning to run riot at this stage and Allan Jenkins wanted to get in on the act. Kevin Finlayson played a great through-ball to the captain, who rounded the 'keeper, but was dismayed to see his shot being cleared of the line by a Montrose defender.
Stranraer kept up the pressure and in the 83rd minute a Kevin Finlayson corner was headed goalwards by a powerful Stephen Swift header at the near post.
Pushing forward in the final minutes, substitute Brian Crawford added insult to injury when he slipped in to the Loons' box and scored after a defence error.
Men of the Match- Stephen Swift a brace from the Stranraer right-back shows Michael Moore and David Graham aren't the only ones to get their name on the score-sheet.
Overall Summary- A fantastic result which seens the Blues sitting atop of the the Third Division table.
