Four goal hero
By S. Archibald
January 28 2004
Michael Moore and Kevin Findlayson scored four and two goals, respectively, without reply against second bottom side Elgin City. However, the win fails to close the gap at the top of the table.

STRANRAER

6-0

ELGIN CITY

Finlayson (38, 61)
Moore (48 pen, 55 pen, 65, 80)
(1-0)

In the first 30 minutes of this match there was little action to speak of, with the only half-decent chance falling to Stranraer. Lee Sharp's inswinging corner in the 12th minute was flicked on by Swift and fell at the feet of Michael Moore, whose shot was defected narrowly wide.

On the half-hour mark a fracas broke out this saw Dickson, Campbell and Tully all being booked for challenges on Finlayson and Moore. The challenge by Craig Campbell on Kevin Finlayson was particularly dangerous as he attempted to but the winger, but only managed to clip his nose.

Five minutes later Campbell fouled Moore in another scuffle. Fraser Wright took the free-kick, but Martin Pirie read the ball well and plucked the ball from the air before Murray Henderson could connect with it.

In the 37th minute Elgin City had their first attempt at goal when an opportunistic shot by John Allison was narrowly turned around the upright for a corner.

Only a minute later the Blues took the lead. Kevin Finlayson gathered the ball at the edge of the box and his well placed shot was just inches wide to the right of Perie's outstretched hands.

Elgin pressed on in search of an equalizer and in the 43rd minute they almost succeeded due to careless Stranraer defending. Murray Henderson thought he had knocked the ball out for a corner and head to the box to await the corner kick. However, the ball had not gone out of play and Willie Martin knocked it in to the box and the awaiting Chris Ogboke. Ogboke only had the keeper to beat, but managed to knock the ball over for a goal kick.

Stranraer got off to a great start in the opening minutes when Stephen was brought down the the Elgin box and Michael Moore stepped-up to take the resulting penalty. Moore read the 'keeper well and scored to his left when Pirie dove to the right.

Seven minutes later Moore got his second, again from the penalty spot. This time Hugh Dickson brought down Kevin Finlayson when he was through with only the 'keeper to beat. Dickson was shown red for his second bookable offence. Michael Moore once again stepped-up, and again slipped the ball past Perie.

Kevin Finlayson got his second goal of the afternoon when Tom McAllister crossed the ball from the right-hand side, and the winger easily tapped the ball into the back of the net.

In the 65th minute Moore got his hat-trick. Lee Sharp arced in a corner and Michael Moore was in the right place at the right time to powerfully head the ball past the hapless Pirie.

With only ten minutes of the match remaining Moore scored his fourth goal of the game (and 20th goal of the season!). A quick flick-on from midfield found Moore twenty-two yards out and his lob beat the 'keeper and hit the underside of the bar and into the goal.

Moore getting M.O.M. award From Mo. HannahMan of the Match - Michael Moore is the obvious candidate after scoring four goals. Credit is due to the whole teams as this really was a team performance.

Overall Summary- A great performance by the Blues that keeps them second in the league.
