Stranraer will see this as two points dropped as they dominated for long spells but couldn't break down a stuffy homeside just playing for pride. The result now means Stranraer must beat promotion candidates Airdrie United at Stair Park next Saturday. Due to our poor goal difference a draw would not be good enough unless Dumbarton were to lose heavily.
There were few chances for either side early on. A Finlayson shot was the closest but it flew harmlessly over from a good position. Another chance fell to Michael Moore, a deep corner came to the unmarked Moore and his powerful header went too close to Gary O'Connor in the Cowden goal. Just before half-time Andy Scott playing on the left hand side beat a couple of players and hit a ferocious shot from 20 yards from an angle that cannoned off the joint of crossbar and post and bounced away to safety. An excellent effort that deserved a goal.
The second half saw defences take an even stronger grip on the game. The Blues dominated territorially with Cowden playing on the counter attack. Cowden's tactics were to launch the ball forward to their centre half who was playing up front, he flicked it on to the pacy Graeme Brown to chase. Stranraer tried to press but their final ball sometimes was very poor with Finlayson and Aitken the main culprits.
On the break Cowdenbeath's Michael Renwick had a shot cleared off the line by Derek Wingate when it looked easier to score. Fraser Wright had a good effort just wide when he went on one of his typical surging runs from the halfway line but his looping shot from 30 yards went inches past the post. Near the end Paul Kerr thought he'd won it when his near post header flashed passed the post with the goalie beaten.
OVERALL SUMMARY- Another game which we should have won. The lack of a goals in recent weeks is a huge factor in why we are staring relegation in the face (no Harty!). Now we have the difficult task of beating Airdrie United at Stair Park in the last game of the season. We beat them in the last game at Stair Park but then the Blues were playing slightly better and Airdrie were further down the table.
STRANRAER M.O.M. - Michael Moore - The big striker had an excellent match and deserved a goal. Won loads of headers and put in a terrific shift. Misses Harty alongside him but if big Kerr had been on earlier then we might have sneaked it.
