Stranraer 4 Cowdenbeath 4
By B. Allen
March 15 2003
Goals a plenty at Stair Park on Tuesday evening but not a good match for the nerves as this league is still as bizarre as ever. Very frustrating night as once we eventually got ahead we let it slip again. The defence must tighten up for the league and cup encounters ahead.

STRANRAER

4-4

COWDENBEATH

Harty (5 pen, 55),
Jenkins (38), Kane (52)
(2-2)
Webster (2), Brown(30),
Elliot (47, 64)

Cowdenbeath started with all guns blazing and were a goal up after 90 seconds. Christopher Webster burst into the box and fired the ball into the corner of the net well out of reach of Hillcoat. Stranraer replied immediately. Paul Kerr skilfully went past the Cowdenbeath tall defender Keith Wilson who bought Kerr crashing to the deck. Ian Harty puts the penalty high past the diving Marc Graham for the equaliser. Stranraer soon nearly doubled there advantage. Jenkins perfect cross found Moore who's glancing header was cleared of the line by Elliot Smith. Slack defending let Cowdenbeath retake the lead. Webster's shot was initially well saved by Hillcoat but the following up Graeme Brown tapped the ball into the empty net. Again Stranraer didn't let down. Harty cross wasn't cleared and it fell to Jenkins on the edge of the area who curled the ball into the far corner of the net.

Cowdenbeath took the lead very early into the second half. John Elliot hit and excellent 25 yard shot which was moving in the air which Hillcoat couldn't get to and it found its way into the back of the net. The wind was a big help to the shot. Yet again Stranraer came back. Andy Kane rifles the ball home after the Cowdenbeath defence had blocked Kerr's shot and then blocked Aitken's shot from the edge of the area. For the first time in the game Stranraer went in front. Kerr held the ball and put it into the path of Harty who finished well with the outside of the boot. Stranraer had a brilliant chance to go 2 goals in front. Kerr through on goal, lifts the ball over the keeper but it drifts wide of the goal. Cowdenbeath then equalised. Hillcoat failed to hold the ball and John Elliot was on hand to punish Stranraer and make the last 25 minutes of the game a good finale but after Beath's fourth goal it slowed down and came a bit disappointing.

STRANRAER MOM- Andy Kane, his first start of the season and showed what he was capable of. He was not scared to put a foot in and challenge for the ball. Deserved his goal.

OVERALL SUMMARY- One of Billy McLaren's quotes " the defence was p!$h " which indeed it was. Stranraer looked good going forward.
