Airdrie's first chance was a turn and shot by McKeown (4 mins) which hit the post. Stranraer didn't learn from this and a couple of poor tackles led to McKeown breaking clear and toe-poking a swerving shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards passed the diving John Hillcoat after 30 mins.
Stranraer tried to get back on level terms with Ian Harty having a good chance. The Blues top scorer ran towards the penalty area but he drifted slightly wide which made his chance more difficult and his resulting shot was tipped over by Mark McGeown for a corner.
Just before half-time
from one of Stranraer's many corners this time by Sandy Hodge, Kevin Gaughan
rose unchallenged to powerfully head the ball against the bar from 6 yards
when it looked easier to score but the ball fell to Fraser (striker) Wright
and he made no mistake from close range.
The second half proved to be very exciting. Stranraer attacked from the off and in the 48th minute a long diagonal free-kick form Derek Wingate was headed down into the six yard box by Michael Moore into the path of the inrushing Ian Harty and he made no mistake flicking the ball into the corner of the net past former Blues keeper Mark McGeown.
Stranraer played well for
another 10 minutes and should have added to the scoreline. Paul Kerr was
clean through and his angled shot was well saved by Mark McGeown. The rebound fell to
Ian Harty but the angle was too tight and his decent attempt was cleared off the line.
However the attack wasn't over. The ball came out to Kevin Finlayson and from about
14 yards out he fired narrowly over.
Then after another fine move Kerr's excellent effort just cleared the bar.
These misses were to be a wake up call for Airdrie. The home support got behind their side and after 73 mins Vareille got the equaliser after an Airdrie player was allowed to waltz through the defence to set up vareille. An extremely soft goal from a Stranraer viewpoint. Then Stranraer conceded a third when a ball into Vareille was well controlled and on the turn he smashed the ball in from 18 yards. A Great Finish.
All credit to Stranraer though and almost straight away from the kick-off we responed with a deep cross finding the unmarked Paul Kerr to head into the corner to send the 60 or so Blues fans wild.
In summary: a wee bit disappointed we couldn't score the third when we were 2-1 up and playing well but a point's better than nothing.
Best for Stranraer were Aitken, Wright, Harty, Kerr, Moore.
Next another vital game against runaway leaders Raith Rovers on Tuesday night at Kirkcaldy.
Man of the Match: Ian Harty - constant threat and looked back to his best in the second half.
