Stranraer 2 Brechin 3: City Surf Past Blues

Loss!
By Ben Allen
February 27 2003
Stranraer came back to the earth with a bump after their Scottish Cup win against Morton with a defeat at the hands of Brechin on a cold Monday night at Stair Park.

STRANRAER

2-3

BRECHIN CITY

Crawford (15)
Kerr (62)
(1-3)
King (3)
Templeman (42, 44)

Stranraer started in there usual fashion by going a goal down very early on. Big Chris Templeman cross and the unmarked Charlie King punished the Blues by nodding the ball past John Hillcoat.

The Blues tried to come back at Brechin quickly through a nice through header by Michael Moore to Ian Harty, but the Stranraer forward shot wide.

In the 15th minute Stranraer equalised. A Marshall corner wasn't cleared properly and Jon Crawford head the ball goalward and into the hands of Brechin 'keeper Scott Thompson. However, the linesman signalled that the ball had crossed the line and awarded the Blues the goal -much to the delight of the pathetically small number of home fans at the match.

Just before half time Stranraer lost a soft goal. Greig Miller's cross into the box was met by the head of Templeman, who made no mistake by guiding the ball past Hillcoat (let down yet again by a cross-ball)

With only one minute remaining in the half Brechin added a third goal, after a blunder by Mr Hardy the referee. He gave Brechin a free kick outside the area, and while the defence was getting put back 10 yards by the referee Templeman struck the ball into the unguarded net without blowing the whistle. Despite the protest by the Stranraer players he gave the goal.

Stranraer started of the second half really well. They got an indirect free kick for a backpass (!) - Mr. Hardy perhaps making ammends for his blunder before the break. Alan Jenkins step up to take it, but instead laid it off to Harty whose shot was blocked.

In the 62nd minute Harry Curran was subsituted by Paul Kerr and immediately made his mark. After only 28 seconds he controlled and shot into the far corner after a hopeful punt up the park.

Kerr acted as a catalyst in the midfield to try and get Stranraer back in the match, and almost equailised when Ian Harty sent him through, but his shot was blocked by Scott Thomson.

Despite a fighting finish by the Blues they were unable to crack Brechin and the visitors took all three points (and leapfrogged Stranraer in the process in the standings).

Man of the Match- Jon Crawford, played well and was solid at the back.

Overall Summary- Defence weren't to clever, but certainly missed Aitken in the midfield role.
