Stranrear Slip Up...again

Another loss
By Ben Allen
February 3 2003
Stranraer slip up yet again to go second in the league with a loss to Dumbarton. Gary McCutcheon gave the visitors the lead after only 5 minutes before Moore leveled the match in the 15th minute. However, the visitors proved to be too strong and got the winner in the 60th minute through Scally.

Dumbarton started this game really well. Young Stranraer native Gary McCutcheon had his left foot shot saved by Hillcoat in the first few minutes of the game. It started form a quick counter attack and neat passing.

Stranraer then fell behind. Michael Dickie's perfect cross to the back post and McCutcheon had the simplest of chances to score. He took his chance. The Stranraer defending was awful, they just stood and watched the ball.

The Blues started to come into the game more. Quick thinking by the MOM Jenkins caught Michael Dickie sleeping, and he fired in a good cross that Paul Kerr headed over the bar under pressure.

In the 16th minute equalised. A corner by Aitken was cleared as far as Jenkins who chips the ball back into the box to find an unmarked Michael Moore. Moore took his time and neatly slotted the ball home.

Stranraer nearly lost their lead on a couple of minutes later. A horrendous mistake by Aitken let Steven Bonar shoot from just on the edge of the area, Hillcoat made a first class save to keep Stranraer on level terms.

With the end of the half fast approaching Jenkins caused more trouble. Jenkins and Finlayson played some great football down the right-hand side. Crisp passing saw Finlayson picking up the ball in the box where his shot was well saved by Steven Grindlay on his near post.

Stranraer didn't produce many chances in the second half, and Dumbarton were seldom troubled.

Dumbarton got there winner in the 60th minute. Dexi Wingate gave away a free kick just outside the area, and veteran Son's player Tom Brown stepped up, but his haste resulted in the kick being taken before the whistle had sounded. As the Stranraer wall regrouped for the shot, up stepped Neil Scally who put the ball in exactly the same place as Brown, giving Hillcoat no chance.

Stranraer nearly replied immediately. Kerr's control and pass played in the speedy Finlayson who raced away from his marker only to see his shot rebound of the foot of the post.

STRANRAER MOM- Allan Jenkins, not one of his better performances but he was a head and a neck in front of all his other team mates- hear what he had to say to me tomorrow.

OVERALL SUMMARY- A poor performance by a very capable team. They had some very good chances to get back into the game. Hoping for a better performance on Tuesday. Will Ian Harty return?
