Stranraer progressed into the third
round of the Scottish Cup after an impressive second half showing of finishing.
The game was played in dreadful conditions with a blustery swirling wind and muddy pitch, which
led to a poor first half. The first real chance fell to Ian Harty after 13 minutes when he
poked the ball over. Five minutes later Paul Nugent nearly got the opener for Stirling but his
shot was blocked. Paul Kerr also missed a couple of decent chances for the Blues.
The second half was much better and with the wind advantage Stranraer took the game to their opponents. The opener arrived after 63 minutes when Mark McNally fouled Ian Harty 30 yards out. Derek Wingate took the resulting free kick and fairly smashed the ball low into the corner of the net passed the helpless Chris Reid. Only five minutes later Stranraer doubled their advantage with a fine goal. Sandy Hodge crossed from the left and from a tight angle Lee Sharp cracked in a great shot into the top corner.
Stirling's hopes were raised when Colin McKinnon hit what proved to be a consolation after 80 mins. The visitors delight was short lived though due to Ian Harty's 83rd minute clincher. Harty calmed the home support's nerves when he collected the ball and fairly thundered it in from close range. Tennents Man of the Match Lee Sharp fired in the fourth after Harry Curran's shot was blocked.
In Summary: Good result for the Blues in difficult conditions. Maybe the superior skills of a team pushing for promotion from the second division proved to be the important factor about this match.
Man of the Match: Tennents MOM was Lee Sharp but according to sources Alan Jenkins ran him close with his tremendous effort throughout.
