Cup Shock? - Stranraer 1 Whitehill Welfare 1

Round One
By S. Archibald
December 7 2002
Michael Moore scores his fifth goal in five games to save Stranraer blushes in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute through their captain Willy Bennett. Moore scored four minutes before half-time to force a reply.

STRANRAER

1-1

WHITEHILL WELFARE

Moore (41)
(1-1)
Bennett (25)

Stranraer played host to a Whitehill Welfare team which on paper we should have easily beaten, especially with a home advantage. However, at the end of ninety minutes the Blues will have to play the match again midweek to decide who will face Stirling Albion.

Most of the early play fell to Whitehill as they decided to take the match to Stranraer.

In the 25th minute captain Welfare Willy Bennett kicked in a low angle drive from 25 yard, after Sean Ronaldson had set the ball up.

The Blues found the going tough, but were able to draw the tie level in the 41st minute through Michael Moore. Allan Jenkins forced 'keeper Scott Cantley to parry his shot, and the ball fell to Moore, who had an easy tap-in from the edge of the six yard box.

The second half belonged to the Blues, but as they have done several times this season they were unable to convert their advantage in possession into goals.

A full match report will be posted tomorrow.
