Purple Patch Continues: Accies 1 Blues 5

Another victory
By S. Archibald

Stranraer slip into second place in the league after a comfortable 5-1 victory over Hamilton Academicals at Ballast Stadium. Goals by Sharp, Jenkins, Finlayson and a double by Harty made light work of the home side. Ally pulled one back for the visitors midway through the second half.

Stranraer's winning ways continued with a convincing victory over Hamilton at Ballast Stadium. Much speculation existed at the start of the week whether Hamilton would even play, since players threatened to boycott the match over a pay dispute.

The match was on six minutes old when the Blues took the lead. Lee Sharp was well positioned in the box when he connected well with an in-swinging cross from Kevin Finlayson, and headed the ball past Potter in the Accies goal.

Ian Harty got his name on the score sheet in the 33rd minute when he lobbed the 'keeper from the edge of the box.

Kevin Finlayson was causing numerous problems for the Hamilton midfield and defense, and it came as no surprise when he broke down the wing four minutes from half-time. His cross found an unmarked Allan Jenkins who made no mistake with his aim.

Content to sit back on their 0-3 lead the Blues took the second half at an easier pace, and it was not until the 61st minute that the match livened up, with three goals scored in the space of seven minutes.

Finlayson finally got his name on the score sheet in the 61st minute when his shot at goal easily beat Potter.

Hamilton were finally sparked into life for minutes later when Ally Graham scored a consolation goal after some complacent defending by the Blues.

However, only three minute later Stranraer had regained their four goal advantage when Ian Harty scored his second goal of the match, again from a Kevin Finlayson cross, which Harty connected with at the back post.

Any chance of Harty attaining his hat-trick were dashed when the forward was substituted by Andy Kane in the 75th minute.

STRANRAER MOM: Ian Harty, got his brace of goals and caused lots of problems for the Accies defense. Honourable mention must go to Kevin Finlayson for his sterling effort throughout the match, as well as scoring a well deserved goal in the second half.

OVERALL SUMMARY- Stranraer continued their excellent form with convincing win over early promotion favourites Hamilton. Good play between the midfield and forwards paid off. Hopefully the Blues can maintain their form for the next match in two weeks time against third place Cowdenbeath.
