Blues Troubles Deepen: Stenhousemuir 2 Stranraer 0

Another loss!

Stranraer sit firmly at the bottom of the Second Division after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. New boy Paul Kerr failed to shine on his debut and Billy McLaren must now wonder what his future will hold.

Stranraer sank to their third league defeat in a row at Ochilview on Saturday, a game which The Blues had very few chances over the 90 minutes.

Stranraer made a promising start, with passes flowing freely from midfield to the wide positions, but Lurinsky in particular looked uneasy against a solid Stenhousmuir defensive wall. Debutante Paul Kerr looked powerful, and his header over the bar in the first half as close as Stranraer got to scoring.

Lurinsky also had a good chance, but the Stenhousmuir keeper did well and the youngster's effort was tame.

Stenhousmuir scored in the 37th minute, a good cross from the right by Steve McCormick found an unmarked MacFarlane who steered it well past Hillcoat's left hand side and into the net. Indeed it could have been two a minute later, but Hillcoat did well to recover from a parried shot, and smothered it under pressure from a couple of Stenhousmuir forwards.

Ian Harty and Kevin Finlayson started the second half, but by now, the Stenhousmuir defence was equal to everything Stranraer threw at them, and in truth, The Blues failed to spark. It was no real surprise when Stenny put the game out of reach in the 71st minute.

Hillcoat punched clear from a corner taken by Jamie Stein, under pressure from two Stenhousmuir forwards (could be argued that he was fouled into making clear contact with the ball), but it was blasted back with interest by midfielder MacKenzie, with Hillcoat out of position, but in reality he would have struggled to save it anyway.

The stats will tell you that Stranraer failed to put a shot on target, and that speaks volumes. The Blues deserved nothing from this game and remain rooted to the foot of the table.
