U's Win in Style
By Scott Hilsden July 27 2002
With just two weeks before the season kicks off The U’s travelled to Woodside Park to take on Ryman Premier Division new boys Bishops Stortford who lost on Tuesday by the odd goal. Their opponents then? Rushden and Diamonds.
Cambridge United
Shaun Marshall
Warren Goodhind (Franco Nacca)
Fred Murray
Andy Duncan (Phil Warner)
Scott Eustace (Adam Tann)
Shane Tudor
Luke Guttridge (Paul Wanless)
Terry Fleming
David Bridges (Alex Revell)
Tom Youngs (Tony Scully)
Dave Kitson (Armand One)

John Taylor sent out a strong team for the latest pre season friendly, again playing with just one out and out striker. The noticeable absentee was free agent Omer Riza who was on the sidelines of the pitch due to injury.

Stortford lost by the odd goal to Rushden in midweek but there was no sign of the hosts causing United any kind of trouble at the back and it took as little as just over a minute for Cambridge to create the first opening when former Blackburn player Fred Murray played Tom Youngs through but Stortford’s ‘big’ centre half Danny Wolf was able to stop Youngs from getting a shot on goal.

It didn’t take long though for the U’s to take the lead when in the seventh minute when ginger Dave gave chase to a ball that the Stortford players thought was going out. Kits then found Tom Youngs with a reverse pass who’s cross then found Terry Fleming who’s shot found the roof of the net to give United the lead.

Tom Youngs doubled the lead just over ten minutes later when referee Yeo told the U’s to carry on after Dave Kitson appeared to be fouled. Luke Guttridge picked up the ball and played a through ball into Youngs, by the time Youngs reached the pass for his first touch he had already passed Stortford keeper Richard Hayward and had an open net to add to United’s tally.

Bridges received treatment after a hefty tackle but was able to carry on and for the U’s Fleming and Bridges both went close before half time and a Youngs cross was just a little to far in front of Kitson and Tudor to finish off another well worked move.

Half Time Bishop Stortford 0 Cambridge United 2

The start of the second half saw just one sub made by Taylor, with captain Paul Wanless coming on for Luke Guttridge. Stortford managed their first shot on goal five minutes into the half Troy Braham turned Andy Duncan but his shot was both high and wide of Dancing Shaun’s goal. Many substitutions followed including one Stortford sub who has probably got the longest name in non-league football, Onado Piexoto dos Santos, the PA announcer was so proud he got the name right he repeated it over the tannoy!

Just before 65 minutes Stortford’s keeper (Richard Hayward) nightmare continued when his goal kick went all of around 35 yards and straight to French forward Armand One who then played in Shane Tudor who’s shot found the bottom corner of the net while Hayward was left on the floor with his head in his hands.

It was still to get worse for the young keeper when a through ball over the top was meet by Stortford’s number 2 Anthony Ormond who headed back, the only problem was Hayward was already coming out to catch the cross. The ball went straight pass him and although Ormond tried stopping the ball, there was nothing he could do to stop the score becoming 4-0.

The scoring was completed with a wonder strike by last years young player of the year Adam Tann when a corner was half cleared and from 25 yards Tann blasted a shot into the bottom corner giving the luckless Hayward no chance.

The score could have easily been more including Armand One going close with a header in a display of flowing passing football from United in a temperature of over 30 degrees. If the boys in Amber can continue this kind of passing football in Division 3 when the season gets under way then there shouldn’t be to many problems facing the management team of John Taylor and Dale Brooks.
Final Score - Bishop Stortford 0 Cambridge United 5
Scorers: Terry Fleming, Tom Youngs, Shane Tudor, Ormond (OG), Adam Tann
