Nelse - Canary
The 29 year old had been with Pools for six seasons following his £80,000 switch from Bury. In that time he played more than 306 games for the club, many of them as captain, and was a big favourite with the fans until poor form last season saw many of them turn against him.
In fact, there are many who believe Nelson’s collapse cost many points in the final quarter of the season, a string of mistakes giving away a lot of goals.
Ian Butterworth, the assistant manager at Norwich and former assistant to Danny Wilson at Pools said he was delighted to be reunited with Nelson (trying out his new colours right) and added: “He felt he’d got a bit stale at his previous club and hopefully this move will give him fresh impetus. He’ll add competition to the back with the other defenders.
“He said he wanted to play on a bigger stage, and we have given him that bigger stage.”
Stale is one word that can be used to describe Nelson’s later form with Pools, but many people would use a stronger word.
However, he gave the club good service overall and most Pools fans will wish him well – apart from on August 29 at the Vic and on January 30 at Carrow Road.
Meanwhile, Pools goalkeeping coach George Wood has left to team up again with Wilson at Swindon and Pools say they are close to lining up a replacement.
After the criticism aimed at Arran Lee-Barrett and Jan Budtz last season, he’s probably hoping life will be easier there.
