Nelson, signed from Bury for a reported £80,000 six years ago, has done a good job for the club, but his form last season in a defence that leaked goals was poor. At a time when a bit of leadership was required to steady a defensive boat that rocked throughout virtually every game, Nelson’s form dipped alarmingly and in the end he was lucky to hold on to his place.
He was a far better player when he was bald (right).
Ben Clark, arguably the best central defender at the club – at least on last season’s form – spent the whole campaign playing in midfield, but Chris Turner has stated already that he will be regarded as a defender in the new season.Peter Hartley, signed from Sunderland on a free, is a natural left-footer, so he will probably play on the left of the middle of the defence, which means that either Clark or Sam Collins will operate on the right. Collins spent most of last season on the left, and that partly explains his form. With several clubs, including Scunthorpe and Norwich, interested in him, Nelson has told the club he will not be accepting the offer of a new contract, and as Pools do not bargain over contracts, that means he is finished as a Pools player. After six years, the time is probably right for him to move, but he did well for most of his time as a Pools player and Chris Turner is right when he says he will be sorry to see him go.He might not have been at his best last season, but he always gave 100 per cent … and he deserves credit for that at least. But if he joins a League One club, most Pools fans will be looking forward to James Brown or Adam Boyd giving him a runaround.
