More names in rumour mill as Pools abandon Fridays

Derek Soutar - target?
By Clarence Rode
May 21 2009
More names have been added to the Hartlepool United rumour mill, but perhaps the biggest - and many would say the best - news to come out of Victoria Park this week is that the club is to abandon its habit of switching some games to Friday nights. It's a victory for common sense and Friday nights on the lash after many fans made it clear they prefer games on a Saturday afternoon.

Pools chief exec Russell Green says the idea has run its course, which of course is another way of saying it hasn't worked. And in recent seasons it certainly hasn't.
There have been a handful of good Friday night games (wasn't the eight-goaler against Grimsby?) and there is a school of thought which says that the atmosphere is better under lights. However, that didn't appear to take into account the fact that the lights at Pools are not the best in the world.
The atmosphere is always better if Pools win, but last-minute home defeats against teams they should be beating are hardly memorable.
Pools asked for opinions from fans and, to the club's credit, have reacted to them.
Meanwhile, Ross County goalkeeper Derek Soutar has been linked with the club. He had a pre-season trial before last season and played in two friendly games in Scotland, saving a penalty in one of them.
He was expected to join the club, but the deal fell throuigh when Jan Budtz's expected departure fell through.
Pools are still waiting for news on their bid to get former keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos back on a season-long loan from Coventry, and they are also believed to have made enquires about Luton keeper Dean Brill.
Local lad Peter Hartley is expected to sign from Sunderland to bolster the defence, while full-backs Richard Jackson (Hereford) and Michael Rose (Stockport) are also being linked with contracts at the Vic.
Meanwhile, Norwich City are believed to be interested in Michael Nelson, who has yet to accept the offer of a new Pools contract. Relegated Norwich are coached by former Pools No.2 Ian Butterworth.
