Pools and Oldham put on a classic in the sun

Richie jones - brill
By Clarence Rode September 21 2008
Hartlepool earned a point against impressive League One leaders Oldham in a classic game at Victoria Park. The game had it all, with plenty of goals, loads of chances, penalty appeals and flowing, end-to-end football that produced entertainment as brilliant as the sunshine. if only every game was as good as this one.

Pools looked dead and burried at half-time, 2-0 down despite the fact that they didn't play badly at all.
But they produced an incredible fight-back at the start of the second haklf, scoring three times to give Oldham as big a shock as they are likely to get all season.
But to their credit, Oldham came back themselves to earn a draw in a game played in wonderful spirit, despite the fact that Oldham's former darlo defender Sean Gregan was sent off in the second half. That was for a last-man foul on the outstanding Richie Jones, but Oldham's claim that there was at least one defender futher back rings true.
Pools played well as a team, once again showing that they can be relied upon to score plenty of goals at ome, even when James Brown isn't on target and there were many positives to take from the game.

Arran Lee-Barrett - looking the part more and more with every game. Not his fault Pools conceded three.
Jamie McCunnieJamie McCunnie (left) - has settled well at right-back at last, and was only subbed for tactical reasons.
Michael Nelson - back to his old self.
Sam Collins - however much he cost, it was a bargain.
Richie Humphreys - Mr Consistency, brilliant cross for Monk's goal.
Antony Sweeney - having a great season so far, always getting forward.
Richie Jones - looks a real find, perhaps needs to start scoring a few goals now.
Gary Liddle - already better than he was last season.
Andy Monkhouse - getting amongst the goals again and back to his best after a frustrating time last season.
James Brown - earned one pen, should have had another, always in the thick of it up front.
Joel Porter - well-taken pen, ran his legs off again and looked knackered at the end.

All in all, it was a tremendous afternoon for Pools, the only blot being the fact that they couldnlt hold their lad for any more than five minutes.
But everybody in both camps admitted a draw was the right result, and most peopel at the Vic would have gladly taken that at half-time, when the score was 2-0 to Oldham.
