By Clarence Rode April 23 2008 With two games left, the end of a frustrating season can't come soon enough for many Hartlepool United fans. But with manager Danny Wilson promising a summer shake-up, the next three months could prove more interesting than the last nine months, and Pools won't even be playing a game.
Most fans would probably have settled for consolidation and a mid-table place on the team's return to League One, but that doesn't make it any easier to take the alarming lack of consistency shown by the team as a whole and by individual players since last August. Now, after the latest flop at Brighton, Wilson says that if his current squad can't hack it in League One, he'll have to sign players who can. The question is, will he be allowed to? Will club owners IOR back the manager to splash the cash during the summer, or will they take the advice of many fans who believe that Wilson's time is up and Pools should look to somebody else to take the club further? Not only have Pools been inconsistent this season, but they have also lacked the spark that has been a feature of their game in so many other recent seasons - they no longer play the sort of fast, attacking football they played under Mike Newell and Neale Cooper. A manager can only play to his squad's strengths, of course, but after two years in charge, this is now Wilson's team and if it's not good enough, then he has to take the blame. His claim after the Brighton match that Pools are suffering a hangover from relegation two years ago is absolute cobblers. Last season's promotion is much more recent, so surely they shouold still be feeling the euphoria of that rather than a hangover from relegation. A lot of important decisions need to be taken, and the quicker they are made the better for the club.
To be honest I would have settled for this finishing position at the beginning of the season . But having seen us play so well at times and then see us just stumble around makes me wonder what is going on behind the scenes.
I'm not the only one who thinks Wilson doesn't know what his best starting 11 is although most of the supporters could tell him.
