Now frustrated Wilson challenges club owners

Ken Hodcroft
By Clarence Rode April 20 2008
Hartlepool's immediate League One future is mid-table obscurity. Their long-term future is no longer in the hands of the players or manager Danny Wilson - it's in the hands of owners IOR and chairman Ken Hodcroft. After his team's latest away surrenders, this time at Brighton, Wilson said that if the current squad can't hack it in League One, he'll have to sign players who can.

So over to you, Mr Hodcroft and your oil-soaked mates at IOR.
Pools hardly set the transfer market alight last summer after winning promotion from League Two, and perhaps the idea always was to give the players who had taken them up a chance to do well in League One.
But while they have survived, with quite a bit to spare in the end, Pools have given Wilson and the fans a lot of frustration this season, and it was the same at Brighton.
Porter front 2Pools were the better side, but lost because they didn't take enough of their chances, apart from a late finish by Joel Porter (left) and made daft mistakes in defence. How many times have we heard that since last August?
Now Wilson has made it clear that he feels money needs to be spent, a back-hand volley with topspin firmly into the IOR court.
How will they respond? Well, how would you respond?
They own a club that loses money and we can only guess why - a tax write-off is probably as close as we will ever get to the truth. So why should they pour more cash into it when they already do so just to keep it afloat?
Well, what would you rather own - a team that treads water and manages to survive or one that challenges for the honours, as Pools have done before in League One?
We all know how the fans would answer.
Wilson has challenged his players to perform several times this season, and all too often they have failed to come up with the goods, all the more frustrating for manager and fans when we all know they can do better than this.
Whether he meant to do so or not, Wilson has now challenged his bosses - their response will decide the club's fate.
