Michael Bridges
Boss Wilson says his top priority is the defence, where he hasn’t been happy with the way his team has leaked goals recently, but most of the players being linked with the club are forwards.
While Wilson wants to strengthen the defence, the fans would probably vote for new faces in the attack, where players like Ian Moore and Richard Barker have had an unfair amount of criticism this season.
Fans tend to get on the back of a forward if he misses a chance, but a defender who makes a mistake that gives away a goal often tends to be forgiven.
The latest list of names linked with Pools includes:
Michael Bridges – the former Sunderland (twice), Leeds, Newcastle, Bolton, Bristol City and Carlisle forward who is currently on loan with Australian side Sydney from Hull City. The trouble with Bridges (apart from looking like Tintin) is that while he has – or at least, used to have – sublime skills, he has failed at clubs more often than he has succeeded. He has scored twice in eight games for Sydney, where one of his team-mates is ex-Bore-o star Juninho.
Evan Horwood – the Hartlepool-born Sheffield United defender currently on loan with Gretna, who are already virtually relegated from the Scottish Premier League. He’s thought to be surplus to requirements at Bramall Lane, despite being a hit in Scotland, and it’s alleged hbe would love to sign for his home-town club.
Darryl Duffy – Pools summer target went to Swansea for £250,000, but may have regretted his move to Wales after failing to secure a regular place at the Liberty Stadium and scoring only one goal. He had originally said he wanted to be nearer his home in Scotland, which made the Swansea move an odd one to figure, but as Wilson has said, how much to Swansea want for him, and how much will he want? And do you want to go for a player again after failing first time?
Chis Brown – (right) another former Sunderland striker, he’s currently out of favour at Norwich. He’s being tracked by other clubs, but a return to his native North East might appeal to him, and Norwich admit they owe Pools a favour after youth team coach Paul Stephenson’s switch to Carrow Road. Mind, he cost them more than £300,000, and that's more than a favour usually costs.
Andy Kirk – joined Northampton from Boston almost three years ago, costing £125,000. A Northern Ireland international, he had joined Boston from Hearts, where he played 75 senior games. He has scored 11 goals for the Cobblers this season.
Eddie Nolan – his second month on loan from Blackburn expires on January 22. Will it be extended again, or will Pools try to make the deal permanent?
