After all, Michael Nelson is looking as good as ever in the back four, alongside another loan signing, Godwin Antwi from Liverpool.
The pair are doing so well that Ben Clark, outstanding alongside Nelson in the promotion team last season, can't get a place in the team.
So Clark is an obvious deputy in case of injury, while the likes of Gary Liddle and Robbie Elliott could also be called in if necessary.
If there is a problem with the team, apart from inconsistency at home, it's in the attack, where Ian Moore has not done badly, but Rochard Barker has so far relied on penalties for his goals and Joel Porter has struggled to make an impact.
So why sign a defender? Only Danny Wilson knows the answer to that one, and the team for the midweek home game with Carlisle might give a clue.
Coles was a player under Wilson at Bristol City, before signing for Hull for £200,000 two years ago. He is 25 and can play in central defence or at full-back.
Meanwhile, Moore (right) is expected to be back in the squad against Carlisle after missing the weekend home defeat against Walsall after being involved in a car accident.
After scoring two of the side's four golals in the victory at Leyton Orient a week before, Moore was a miss againt Walsall, but his injuries weren't serious and Wilson expects him to be fit in time.
The manasger is hoping for more passion from his players against Carlisle than he got in the Walsall match. He also wants the crowd to get behind the side.
He says the atmosphere was very quiet against Walsall and against Swindon, and he has a point.
But many fans will say that it's up to the team to get the crowd going, rather than the other way round.
