The Hartlepool United playing squad, 2009-10
By Clarence Rode
July 20 2007
If you want a detailed biography of every member of staff at Hartlepool United or need to know how much the reserve goalkeeper weighs or how tall the club captain is, look somewhere else. Stuff like that is not here - this is not a stats page, but a look at the personalities Chris Turner will be relying on between August 2009 and May 2010. We will update and amend as necessary (if we remember).

After a quiet summer in 2008, it as all go for Pools in 2009 with a string of new players joining the club after they just managed to avoid relegation to league two in May.
The Pools squad, with numbers (* indicates new signing), for the season is:

1 - *Scott Flinders - ex-Barnsley keeper, signed after being shown the door at Crystal Palace.
2 - *Neil Austin - signed from a club situated in a daft stadium on the A66, he's another former Barnsley man who is reckoned to be rock hard.
3 - Richie Humphreys - been at the club since the Battle of Hastings and one of the top names in Pools' history.
4 - Gary Liddle - former Boro youngster, looked jaded in midfield last season but could have a new career as a defender.
5 - Sam Collins - signed in January 2008 for £75,000 from Hull, appoointed club captain for the season, hit by injuries but when he is on form he is a solid performer.
6 - Ben Clark - forced to operate in midfield for much of last season, but regarded as a better defender by most people. Popular with the fans for his 100 per cent effort and a canny right hook.
7 - *Leon McSweeney - signed for nowt from Stockport, another newcomer with a good reputation.
8 - Richie Jones - midfield free from Man Utd in 2008, scored a great goal on his debut v Colchester. Made a hasty transfer request in July, withdrawn a week or so later.
9  - *Denis Behan - signed from Cork City summer 2009, looked decent in pre-season and allegedly does not take prisoners.
10 - Adam Boyd - a Pools legend, he returned to the club from Orient in summer 2009 and had a difficult time readjusting. But if he can find his old touch, he will do well.
11 - Andy Monkhouse - fans' favourite, but has suffered for arguing with opponents, refs and sometimes goes quiet during matches.
12 - James Brown - as good as a new player after missing most of last campaign with a knee injury. A class act.
14 - Jonny Rowell - academy midfield player who is allegedly full of promise. Heoprffully he'll get a chance to show it.
15 - Antony Sweeney - non-stop midfield player, wasted last season at right-back, deserves a chance to establish himself in one role.
17 - David Foley - tiny but fast, scored a beauty against Stoke in the FA Cup, but needs League goals.
18 - Michael Mackay - former Consett striker on loan at Gateshead for the first half of the season. Another who needs goals.
19 - *Jon-Andre Fredriksen - signed from some Scandinavian team we've never heard of, but looked good pre-season and could be the midfield anchor man pools need.

20 - Alan Power -  free from Forest in summer 08, given few chances and his career appears to need a kick-start.
21 - Mark Cook - keeper freed by Mags in 08, said to be full of potential but never given a chance to show it ... yet.
22 - Matty Tymon - only 19, a prolific scorer for youth a reserve teams, his chance could come this season.
29 - *Peter Hartley - Hartlepool lad freed by the Mackems in 09, solid defender who will probably be a regular.
