Goals from Shefki Kuqi, Jim Magilton, two from Tommy Miller and one from Pablo Couñago sealed the win while David Vaughan struck back for the railwaymen.
Town knew they had to win both their final two games and hope Wigan slipped up in their final two, well Wigan could only manage a draw against Preston earlier in the day so a win for Town would take them level with points with the Latics.
Town started the game brilliantly and had a reward for their possession and passing after just 6 minutes when Ian Westlake dodged one defender threaded the ball past two more to Kuqi who sent to ball past Clayton Ince into the back of the net.
Six minutes later Jim Magilton scored his 3rd goal in 6 games to make it 2-0, Westlake again the provider passing to Magilton who let fly with his right foot from the edge of the box.
Darren Bent had plenty of chances to add to scoreline before half time, sending efforts every where apart from the back of the net. Not long after half time he was very unfortunate not to have made it 3 when he lifted the ball just over Ince but he couldn’t get the extra touch he needed to guide the ball before it passed the touch line.
Town midfielder Tommy Miller scored his 14th of the season after he had ran virtually unchallenged from the half way line into the Crewe box and managed to curl the ball round Ince and in.
Miller must have felt 14 goals was not good enough for him this year so in the 81st minute he went and scored number 15 when he got on the end of Pablo Couñago’s pass and fired home.
Couñago him self got on the score sheet a minute later when he volleyed home Bent’s cross to make it 5-0 with 8 minutes to go.
David Vaughan got one back for Crewe in the 90th minute, with a little bit of help from Kelvin Davis who didn’t manage to hold on to what was a very good shot from 25-yards out.

Looking ahead to next week, its not really in our hands we need Reading to take points off Wigan while avoid slipping up against Brighton who aren’t quite safe from the drop.
