Report: Town 1-1 Sheff U
By Aston
November 29 2008
Town moved up a place in The Championship to 10th following the 1-1 draw with Sheffield United, but it could have been 6th if it wasn't for James Beattie's late penalty.
Town made four changes from the side that lost against Birmingham in mid-week, Jon Walters and Owen Garvan were left out due to injury. Ben Thatcher was dropped from the squad entirely while Richard Naylor was dropped to the bench. In came Miller, Norris, Volz and McAuley.

Neither side was massively pro-active in the opening exchanges, with only a few half chances from either side.

Billy Sharp and Chris Morgan both had efforts from the edge of the area for the visitors while Jon Stead came close for Town after 14 minutes but his shot bounced wide.

Velice Shumulikoski volleyed wide from a Darren Ambrose cross. David Norris was just inches wide of giving Town the lead but his effort seemed a mile off compared to Pablo Counago's shot from the edge of the area which beat Paddy Kenny only to hit the inside of the post and rebound clear.

Billy Sharp was denied by a fantastic save from Richard Wright and the offside flag.

Town took the lead in the 38th minute, when the assistant spotted that Matt Kilgallon had handled the ball from a Jon Stead cross, after the referee allowed the game to continue he pulled play back and awarded Town a penalty which Tommy Miller converted with Paddy Kenny diving the wrong way.

Town looked for a second goal from the off in the second half, Moritz Volz came close, his 20-yard-effort being parried round the post for a corner by Paddy Kenny.

Alex Bruce came close to a second goal within a week, but his shot was cleared by Naysmith after it had beaten Kenny.

The visitors made attacking changes as they went in search of a goal, Danny Webber and Nathan Dyer both coming on while Town replaced Ambrose with Quinn and Miller with Naylor to give an extra body in defence for the final 30 minutes.

Matt Kilgallon thought he had brought his team level again only to see Richard Wright push his near post header out for a corner.

The Blades drew level in the 88th minute, Alan Quinn inexplicably raising his arms and handling a shot from James Beattie, the referee awarded a penalty which Beattie converted. Town reacted by brining Kevin Lisbie on for the final minutes in place of Jon Stead but had to settle for just a point.
