Town made one change from the side that beat Blackpool last week, Gareth McAuley injured himself in training and didn't travel to The Keepmoat Stadium meaning Alex Bruce returned to the starting side.
Bruce was called into action early on, being forced to clear as Doncaster looked for an early goal.
Town's first chance came in the 20th minute when Richard Naylor headed an Owen Garvan corner downwards towards the goal only to see it bounce up and hit the face of the cross bar. David Norris' follow up effort was blocked as Doncaster cleared the danger.
Moritz Volz picked up his fifth yellow card of the season after being booked for handball.
Alan Quinn went close, being denied by veteran goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, who managed to tip Quinn's shot over.
David Norris went ridiculously close for Town, Volz's cross was headed down by Walters to Norris who shot across goal but somehow missed the target.
As Town started to look like a threat, Doncaster took the lead. Walters was balling watching as Doncaster whipped in a free-kick which Shelton Martis headed home.
The second half was, in a word poor. Both sides did manage to create a couple of decent chances between them.
Darren Ambrose was introduced for his second Town debut and nearly scored with a volley which was tipped over by Sullivan.
Martin Woods was unlucky to be denied by Wright after Woods' shot took a deflection off David Norris which took it out of the path of Wright who managed to get an arm to it and push the ball away.
Pablo Counago headed a cross from Jon Stead just wide and Stead himself tried his luck from distance with a volley the went just over the bar.
