Town end the first quarter of the season on Saturday, with the visit from Swansea City.
The Swans make the near 300-mile trip across England, from their Liberty Stadium for the first League meeting between the two clubs for 25 years, on the back of an impressive 3-1 victory over the (then) League leaders Wolves a fortnight ago.
Roberto Martinez has assembled a very good squad down there in Wales, after winning the League one title last season, his side currently have 15 points and sit in 8th place in the table, with wins over Nottingham Forest (H 3-1), Plymouth (A 1-0), Preston (A 2-0) and Wolves (H 3-1). Draws against Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Burnley all 1-1, and just 3 defeats Charlton Athletic (A 0-2) on the opening day, Crystal Palace (A 0-2) and most recently at goal mad Reading (A 0-4).
In the Carling Cup The Swans have reached the fourth round, with wins over Brentford, Hull and local rivals Cardiff City. Martinez's side now face Watford at home in early November, just 2 days after the sides meet for the same fixture in the Championship.
Two players to look out for are on loan Spanish midfielder Jordi Gomez, who has notched 4 goals so far this season, and Trinidad & Tobago striker Jason Scotland, who won last season's League one 'golden boot' after scoring 29 goals, and has already hit the target 3 times this campaign.
Referee for Saturdays encounter is Mr Jon Moss, from my 'neck of the woods' West Yorkshire. He has officiated four Town games over the last few seasons. Our 3-1 defeat at Leicester City in 2006, our FA Cup 0-0 draw away at Chester City in Jan 2007, a 3-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle 2 months later. And our 4-0 drubbing last season at West Brom. In those four games he has shown 6 yellow cards to Ipswich players and 1 yellow and 1 red to the opposition.
Our League record at Portman Road against Swansea City:
Played: 10
Won: 6
Drawn: 1
Lost: 3
Goals:
For: 21
Against: 14
Our biggest victory is 4-1, which came in August 1959 in a Division 2 game. Ted Phillips(3) and Peter Berry with our goals. Of our three home defeats, the greatest is by 3 goals to nil, which came in our 2nd Division title winning season of 1960/61.
The highest attendance is 24,190 when Town were the UEFA Cup Champions (1981), Goals from Arnold Muhren and Paul Mariner not good enough to prevent The Blues losing 3-2. The lowest crowd is 11,023, who saw Ray Crawford add another 3 goals to his exceptional Ipswich Town tally in a 3-2 victory in Feb 1959.
The two clubs have met 23 times in all competitions Home and Away, the most recent being Our FA Cup 4th round home win in January 2007 Alan Lee scored the only goal of the game. From those 23 games, Ray Crawford is our all-time leading scorer with 7 goals, his partner in crime Ted Phillips is next inline with 6 shots in the 'onion bag'.
Just 12 players have represented both clubs, they include, Andy Legg, Lee Chapman and goalkeeper Lee Bracey.
Leggi predicts: After what I class as a 'dismal' opening quarter to the 2008/09 season, its really time to get going now. If you'd have asked me before the campaign kicked-off about Swansea I'd have said they would be one of the strugglers, but to their credit they have proved me wrong so far. Sitting in 8th place and looking to make it 3 wins out of 3, they will come to a bemused Ipswich side and I reckon will come away with at least a draw. I'll say 2-1 to the Welsh outfit.
Mr Magilton your P45 awaits.
