Crewe Alexander have hinted a club is edging towards matching their valuation of 21-year-old striker Nicky Maynard while Town boss Jim Magilton says he won't pay over the odds for him.
Town along with a number of other clubs have been linked with Maynard who has scored 35 goals in 65 appearances for the railwaymen. Which has prompted the Alex to place a £2.5 million price tag on his head, something Crewe's head coach Steve Holland says a club are close to matching.

Holland: "Nicky has been kept in touch with everything that is happening. There has been interest.

"We have got a valuation and if it is met, we would put the option to Nicky. We have to, that was the promise we made when he signed his extension and he trusts us.

"If he was beating down the door to go and the fee wasn't quite right, we'd have to deal with it. But at this stage he seems fine with it all.

"Ideally, he has a good season with us and has loads of options at the end of it. No one has met the valuation but one club has got close and Nick is aware of that."

Town manager Magilton's view of Maynard:: "Nicky is someone we like and someone we feel has a lot of potential but it may be that Crewe prices him out of the market.

"It is an inflated market as we know and no disrespect to any lads that have gone for big money but look at the prices paid for Iain Hume and Martin Paterson.

"Championship clubs are spending money and in order to be in the mix we need to spend. We are not frightened of doing that but we have to make sure it is the right one.

"Nicky has scored a lot of goals at that level and it could be he can step up - it is something we have to consider.

"But either way we are not going to pay over the odds for any player."
