Report: Town 1-0 Hull
By Aston May 4 2008
Town picked up the three points they needed to stand any chance of a play-off place with a win against Hull earlier today but results elsewhere kept Town in the championship for another season.
For Town to have made the play-offs they would have needed Crystal Palace, Watford and Wolves all to lose but it ended with Palace destroying Burnley 5-0, Watford drawing 1-1 with Blackpool and Wolves beating Plymouth 1-0.

The game it self started very brightly with both sides going extremely close in the first five minutes, Shefki Kuqi thought he had given Town the lead after Pablo Counago's shot hit the bar and the Finn headed in only for the offside flag to be raised against the striker who appeared to be onside by some margin when the original ball came in from Pablo.

At the other Hull came within a whisker of scoring when Dean Marney fired over from close range while under pressure from Bywater and De Vos.

Wayne Brown brought down Counago but the referee gave Town the advantage which allowed Tommy Miller to fire against the before the referee booked Brown for the earlier foul.

Bruce headed over for Town and ended up needing a bandage round his head after clashing with a Hull defender.

Dean Windass' free kick went wide. Kuqi couldn't quite connect with David Wright's pass. Counago was booked for a foul on Marney as the first half ended goalless.

Town started the second half knowing that Watford were losing and Wolves were drawing so a win for Town would have taken them into the top six.

Alan Quinn seemed very aware of that fact when he took his chances from 25-yards, his effort went just wide, Jason De Vos headed just wide from a corner later on.

Bruce showed a lot of his father character during the game, throwing himself into the path of Folan who looked like he was through on goal. Owen Garvan set up Counago but the Spaniard could only fire wide.

Miller cleared from Ricketts as Hull tried to prise open the Town defence but it was Blues that continued to create the better openings, Quinn heading over from Haynes' cross, the wideman then blazing wide from 12 yards.

Alan Lee, a summer target of Hull was introduced with just over 20 minutes left to play and he made an almost instant impact. Walters crossed in for Lee to squeeze between two Hull defenders and head the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Hull went in search of an equaliser, Ashbee headed straight into Bywater, Windass was denied by a great tackle from Danny Simpson but the game started to run flat as Hull seemed to concede to defeat and finishing 3rd in the league and Town seemed aware that Watford had gone level with Blackpool to put Watford back in the top 6.

The final 5 minutes were nervy but played at a low tempo.
