Saturday 22nd March 2008, Glanford Park, Kick-off 15:00.
Founded in 1899, Scunthorpe United play their home games at the 9,183 capacity Glanford Park Stadium. Managed by (ex-physio) Nigel Adkins, they ended Champions of League One last season but have failed to match that excellent form this term. They lost 3-1 at QPR at the weekend and despite leading at Wolves on Tuesday night they eventually lost 2-1, they currently sit second-bottom in the League ladder, 6 points from safety and 18 points back from 9th place Town.
Ipswich won the corresponding fixture at Portman Road in December, goals from Counago, Garvan and Miller enough for a 3-2 victory.
FORM GUIDE
(13th) Ipswich Town P6 W2 D2 L2
(16th) Scunthorpe United P6 W2 D1 L3
MATCHFACT: This is Town's first League visit to Scunthorpe United for 48 years, a club where we have never gained 3 points.
OUR LEAGUE RECORD AT SCUNTHORPE UNITED
Played: 3
Won: 0
Drawn: 2
Lost: 1
Goals:
For: 3
Against: 7
The highest attendance came in our first ever trip to Scunthorpe, 13,317 watched a 1-1 draw in 1958, Tom Garney's with the goal for the
Blues.
The lowest gate (11,130) witnessed a 4-0 walloping for Ipswich, in August 1964.
We have never won away at Scunthorpe in the League, our only ever victory came in the
League Cup in 1986, goals from John Deehan and Jason Dozzell giving Town a 2-1 win. Our only loss at Glanford Park/The old Showground came in the game mentioned above 4-0 to 'The Iron'.
Our leading all time goalscorer against Scunny is, surprise surprise, Ray Crawford who notched 4 goals, his partner in crime Ted Phillips is second with 3.
12 Players have represented both clubs, they include: Tony Vaughan, Neil Woods, David Hill and our star of the season Jon Walters.
Leggi's Player to fear: 20-year-old Striker Martin Paterson, who started his career at Stoke City in 2005 where he managed just 1 goal in 15 games, he moved to Blundell Park, Grimsby on loan last season for 3 months and scored 6 goals in 13 games before returning to the Britannia Stadium. Nigel Adkins signed him for Scunthorpe last summer as a replacement for Sheffield United bound Billy Sharp, and Paterson has done well this season, he's scored 14 goals in 35 games making him 'The Iron's leading scorer, including four goals in his first four games. His goals tally earned him a call up to the full Northern Ireland squad in November after numerous caps at under 21 level. He scored both Scunthorpe goals against Town In December in their 3-2 defeat.
Leggi predicts: on paper we should easily win this game, but we have said this many, many times this season before and failed miserably. Our squad is depleting each game now due to injuries and this, I feel, will be critical in our fading promotion dream, Scunny are fighting for their Championship lives and will provide very difficult opposition, They are unbeaten for 2 months at Glanford Park, and in striker Martin Paterson they have signed what looks like a real player for the future.
Jim will want a far far better display than the last away game at Barnsley, but I still feel Scunny will provide too stiff a test for ourselves and our lack lustre away form this year. 2-1 to Scunny.
Leggi is predicting a loss, how are you feeling ahead of Saturday?
