Leeds agree new sponsorship deal
Leeds have announced a new seven-figure shirt sponsorship deal with whisky distillers Whyte and Mackay.
The three-year contract is worth a guaranteed £3million, starting from next season, with an extra £3.5million available in performance-related bonuses.
The figure is a relative drop in the ocean considering Leeds announced a loss up to the end of December of £17.2million last week, and are now £78.9million in debt.
In light of the club's turmoil this season, Leeds could have struggled to tie up a significant sponsorship package to replace Strongbow, but new chairman Professor John McKenzie revealed that was not the case.
"We appreciate friends in the sponsorship world, and we particularly appreciate it when times are hard," said McKenzie.
"There are some things that are important, and sponsors are very important. I much appreciate the commitment to the club made by Whyte and Mackay.
"You either see a pot as half empty or half full, and we aware we were very close to a sponsorship deal, so we were delighted when Whyte and Mackay came in.
"It reflects on the value of the football market, the fact we are moving forward and looking to the future with important new relationships.
"We can see many opportunities. Once we've got the first deal in place, the spin-off opportunities are considerable, particularly in Asia which is going to be a potent force for us in the future."
