Leeds stood on the brink of the most embarrassing European result in their history as they were outplayed during the first half of their Uefa Cup clash with Metalurg Zaporizhzhya.

Irakli Modebadze hauled his side level on aggregate with a looping header in the 24th minute.

Terry Venables sprung a major surprise by dropping Mark Viduka from the starting line-up for the return leg of Leeds' Uefa Cup first-round clash against Zaporizhzhya.

Viduka was benched as Venables opted for Harry Kewell and Alan Smith up front, with Lee Bowyer playing in an attacking role behind the front-running duo.

Venables also recalled Nick Barmby to the midfield alongside Stephen McPhail and Eirik Bakke, with Olivier Dacourt on the bench.

Danny Mills was drafted in to the centre of defence to partner skipper Dominic Matteo, while Ian Harte was also restored to the side.

It took until the 17th minute for the first chance to materialise.

Bakke was on the end of a whipped-in Harte free-kick from the right wing but the Norwegian headed over the bar.

Five minutes later Zaporizhzhya created their initial opportunity.

Eduard Valuta's through ball picked out Irakli Modebadze for a shot on the slide which was directed straight at Paul Robinson, although he was then picking the ball out of his net soon after as Metalurg drew level on aggregate.

Brazilian winger Fabio Vasconcelos, given time and space, curled a stunning 25-yard left-foot shot onto the angle of bar and post, with Robinson beaten all ends up.

The Leeds defence then stood and watched as Modebadze looped the rebound header back over the England Under-21 international goalkeeper from eight yards to spark wild scenes on the bench and the pitch, with the Georgian mobbed by his team-mates.

Within moments, Leeds had the opportunity to regain the initiative as Harte flicked on a Barmby corner for Matteo to fire in a rocket of a 10-yard half volley which Andriy Gluschenko held on to - to the frustration of the Scotland international.
