Ken Bates sold the club to Roman Abramovich and the Russian effectively bankrolled Chelsea's new era of glory. The club had an embarrassment of riches on the field. Domestic giants such as Joe Cole, Lampard and Terry were joined by Carvalho, Cech, Drogba, Makalele, and Robben. However, Abramovich was not easily pleased as a host of illustrious managers were hired and fired at regular intervals.

2003-04: Chelsea finished second. They conceded less goals at home and won more away matches than any other club, including the so-called 'invincibles.'

Best result: Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 CHELSEA 5 (Lampard and Hasselbaink scored the first-half goals. Duff added a third and Crespo scored two more.)

Horrible result: CHELSEA 1 Bolton Wanderers 2 (Hernan Crespo opened the scoring, but Bolton soon equalised. John Terry however scored a late own goal.)

2004-05: CHELSEA WERE CHAMPIONS. The Blues conceded only six goals at home and nine goals away. They also scored the most away goals in the league.)

Best result: Charlton Athletic 0 CHELSEA 4 (Damien Duff scored an early goal. John Terry added the next two goals and Eidur Gudjohnsen scored the fourth.)

Horrible result: Manchester City 1 CHELSEA 0 (A Nicolas Anelka penalty was all that stood between Chelsea and an unbeaten Premiership campaign. Shame!)

2005-06: CHELSEA WERE CHAMPIONS. The team were unbeaten at home, winning 18 out of 19, and they conceded less away goals than any other club.

Best result: Liverpool 1CHELSEA 4 (Lampard opened the scoring with a penalty. Duff scored just before half time. Cole and Geremi added two more goals!)

Horrible result: Middlesbrough 3 CHELSEA 0 (Rochemback, Downing, and Yakubu scored the goals in this sensational defeat for England's new superpower.)

2006-07: Chelsea finished second. The Blues drew their last five league matches. Otherwise they would have won the Premiership for a third consecutive time.

Best result: West Ham United 1 CHELSEA 4 (Wright-Phillips scored twice in the first half. Then, our lethal African duo of Kalou and Drogba added two more.)

Horrible result: Liverpool 2 CHELSEA 0 (The visitors could field no recognised centre halves and were duly punished. The hosts scored two early goals.)

2007-08: Chelsea finished second. The team were unbeaten at home and won more away matches than any other club. They fell just short of league glory.

Best result: CHELSEA 6 Manchester City 0 (Didier Drogba scored a goal in each half. The other goals were scored by Essien, Cole, Kalou, and Shevchenko.)

Horrible result: Aston Villa 2 CHELSEA 0 (Knight and Agbonlahor scored the second-half goals that undermined the managerial credibility of Jose Mourinho.)

2008-09: Chelsea finished third. The Blues finished with eleven wins from thirteen league matches during their excellent renaissance under Guus Hiddink.

Best result: Middlesbrough 0 CHELSEA 5 (Salomon Kalou scored the only goal of the first half. Belletti, Lampard, and Malouda added further goals in this rout.)

Horrible result: Manchester United 3 CHELSEA 0 (Ronaldo, Rooney, and Park scored the goals for the reigning champions in this January debacle.)

2009-10: CHELSEA WERE CHAMPIONS. The team won more home matches than any other club, recording a remarkable total of 68 goals at Stamford Bridge.

Best result: Portsmouth 0 CHELSEA 5 (Drogba and Malouda shared the first four goals and Lampard added a late fifth. Chelsea only led 1-0 at half time.)

Horrible result: CHELSEA 2 Manchester City 4 (Bellamy and Tevez scored two each. Lampard opened the scoring and added a late consolation in this setback.)

2010-11: Chelsea finished second. They conceded less away goals than any other team, but their league campaign came unstuck in November and December.

Best result: Wigan Athletic 0 CHELSEA 6 (Anelka and Kalou recorded second-half doubles after Malouda had scored the opener. Benayoun added a sixth.)

Horrible result: CHELSEA 0 Sunderland 3 (Onuoha, Gyan, and Welbeck scored the goals. Chelsea were top of the league but they now fell into a decline.)

2011-12: Chelsea finished sixth. The team won only two of their last six matches. They needed to win the Champions League in order to make amends!

Best result: Bolton Wanderers 1 CHELSEA 5 (Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge shared four first-half goals. Lampard later completed his treble.)

Horrible result: CHELSEA 3 Arsenal 5 (The hosts led 2-1 at the interval. Juan Mata then scored a fine equaliser but Robin Van Persie produced two late goals.)

2012-13: Chelsea finished third. The Blues lost only one of their last eleven league matches as they ensured another season in the Champions League.

Best result: Stoke City 0 CHELSEA 4 (Walters kindly scored two own goals and missed a penalty. Lampard did not miss his penalty and Hazard added a goal.)

Horrible result: CHELSEA 0 Queen's Park Rangers 1 (Ex-Chelsea player Shaun Wright-Phillips stunned Stamford Bridge with a late winner for struggling QPR.)
