Defender Danny Higginbotham has this afternoon signed for League One side Sheffield United until the end of the season.
The 35 year old Stoke City defender joined Town on loan in September, initally for a month before having his loan extended at Portman Road until January as the club looked to expand their defensive options.
Last week Town boss Mick McCarthy confirmed that the club had agreed to extend the loan spell of the former Manchester United trainee until the end of the season, but before the paperwork was completed a club nearer Higginbotham's home in the North of England was reported to have approached Stoke regarding a full deal.
That club it is now confirmed was Sheffield United and the player has now joined the Blades on a free transfer and could make his debut in this afternoon's clash against Doncaster Rovers. It's believed the deal to bring the player to Bramall Lane includes an option for an extra year at the end of the season.
