SPEED'S 400 RECORD

Speed made his first Premiership appearance as a Leeds player in a 2-1 win over Wimbledon at Elland Road on August 15, 1992 and since then, has been at Everton and Newcastle - bagging himself 67 goals on the way, puttin him 24th in the list of the Premiership's all-time leading goalscorers.

Speed said: "The 400 games is a nice landmark to reach and something I'm naturally very proud of.

"Who would have thought I'd still be plying my trade in top-flight football when I made my debut for Leeds way back in 1989.

"That said, though, it's only a statistic and far more important to me is the success of Newcastle United this season, both in the UEFA Cup and finishing in the top four of the Premiership."

Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson said: "That 400-game figure represents playing 40 matches a season for 10 seasons.

"That's wonderful. It's a testament to Gary's sheer professionalism - he remains one of the most respected players in the game."
