Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Middlesbrough v Newcastle Utd
By Tyne-Talk
March 13 2010
Newcastle United travel to the Riverside Stadium today where Middlesbrough play host in the Tyne-Tees derby. Boro have won three of their last six games, having lost the other three, whilst Newcastle have won their last four, drawn the fifth and lost the sixth with 16 goals.
Whilst Middlesbrough are chasing a playoff position Newcastle are 6 points clear at the top of the table and will be looking to make the most of their recent confidence on the pitch.

Jose Enrique (hamstring) is expected to play some part in the match, after playing just half an hour last weekend on his return from injury and Wayne Routledge could be available after a calf injury has kept him out of the last three games.

Joey Barton, despite 45minutes in a reserve match is unavailable as is Alan Smith who is struggling with an ankle injury. Long term absentee Steven Taylor remains sidelined.

Gordon Strachan will be without Jeremie Aliadiere who is out with a broken leg, Willo Flood is unlikely to feature due to a knee injury, nor is Emanuel Pogatetz as he too struggles with a knee injury.

Chris Riggott could return having recovered from a hamstring problem, as could Scott McDonald who has returned to training after a hernia operation.

Middlesbrough continue to be without long term absentees Tony McMahon (foot), Seb Hines (ligament) and Matthew Bates (ligament) and they go into the game knowing that they haven't won a home game against a team in the top ten this season.

Fact: Boro have scored 17 goals in 17 home games this season. But have failed to score in 14 Championship games - a number higher than any other team.

Fact: 14 of Newcastle United's 21 wins this season have been by more than 1 goal.

ok Im going for a 3-0 today, boro are too weak for us, I can see Lovenkrands getting 1 and carroll with the 3rd from either guthrie or nolan depending on the CM pairing.

Cmon the Toon.

I'll be happy with a 2-1. Away match, they treat it as a derby whether it actually is or not.

Williamson, McDonald, Carroll

2-0 to us They are not scoring and our defence is much improved.

Don't care who scores them.

Apparently Big Mike Williamson is out for this one. Nufc.co.uk just mentioned it in their match write-up.

I assume Colo was injured. Other than that, I can only make sense of these subs by assuming that Routledge was never going to be used.

Only managed to listen to a small part but would have taken this result before the game and espec when we have come back from 2-1. Suppose we took the lead but it was against the run of play.

Form always goes out of the window with these matches and it stretches our gap from Forest to 9 points with 1 in hand. Three games to go then Forest at home. One at home and two away. If they go our way and we beat Forest at home we could just about be out of sight for automatic promotion with seven games left.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Middlesbrough v Newcastle Utd
Just finished watching the game on replay (went to work where they have ESPN 360).

I'm happy to take a point from that fixture; I'm happier to take a point from that match. We weren't good enough for 3 points, and were barely worth the one. They dominated the first half, and really the opening 60 minutes as a whole. They stretched us well out wide

I didn't understand the Nicky Butt substitution. I'm glad Hughton didn't risk Routledge or Enrique, but Butt for Lovenkrands wasn't logical at all. Nicky's first act was to give away the free kick that led to their 2nd goal. Every other time he touched the ball he lost it.

On the bright side: Kadar was calm and collected on the ball, made some good tackles, and overall was worth his spot. Jonas was indefatigable, and the build up/finish for our two goals were fantastic (Carroll scored with his foot!).

waffles, which other subs, given the two you didnt fancy, could have come on to stem the flow?

the others were strikers? butt had to come on, the choice of player to come off was more debatable..

Our bench was a bit flat today, and that's fair, but I don't know that Nicky Butt "had" to come on. I'd have swapped striker for striker and brought on Ranger or Best for Lovenkrands would have been wiser at that point in time. Another option would be bringing off Pancrate for one of the two forwards, moving Lovenkrands to the Wing.

Boro were pushing us wider and wider after Colo came off. Bringing Butt in just helps them out, as he can't get from the middle to the wide positions fast enough. Not to mention, we had no control of possession in the midfield, and Butt plays the long ball as first, second, and third option.

Smith and Williamson being out hurt our bench a lot, but I'd have rather had an attacking substitution at 1-1 with 20 minutes to play

by all accounts we hadnt managed to make many attempts on boro's goal though, so getting butt on to stem the flow perhaps made sense? more ball, less defending (theory!), more chance of a goal ourselves?
happy with a draw though, yeah.
starting to trust hughton? could have lost this quiet easily

I think the idea of bringing in a defensive midfielder could make sense, but personnel wise, we didn't have the type of player available that would have done what was needed. If Smithy was on the bench, the idea would work. Although Butt does all the little things that make the defense tick (shields players, tackles hard, is willing to take a yellow card if it means saving a free run), he's not someone who looks comfortable in possession. He'll get you the ball and the knock it as far upfield as he possibly can. Smith at least gets the ball and tries to get it to Jonas or Nolan.

Theoretically, you're right, the move makes sense. In practice, Butt's not the player you want for that move. With the number of injuries we had coming into this game, Houghton had the chance to see if one of the kids could do anything. Maybe he should have had Inman or Baheng on the bench instead of Enrique.

I'm happy with the point, very happy in fact. However, I'm happy because I didn't think we were good enough for it today. Houghton made 2 calls today that I liked a lot - Pancrate to start over Routledge, R. Taylor on instead of Enrique when Colo got hurt. I just wish we hadn't been beat in the middle and attacking third.

We need to be getting rid of Butt, even in this division he has been cr@p, so how bad is the lad going to be in the premiership. If he is the only player that we can stick on out of the seniors, then lets play one of the kids

I've added the goals here:
Newcastle United Goals

I think its a good point earned considering it was a derby and also because Forest dropped points. To have a nine point gap with a game in hand is fantastic and if we win our remaining home games we should have enough points for automatic promotion. Great character shown from the lads and now I'm looking forward to Wednesday night.
