Player ratings vs Hull City
Shay Given (8) - Made some good saves and looked very composed in goal. The way he played he looked as if the off field words which were said never even happened, didn't seem like an unsettled player. Quality keeper, and words won't do his consistency justice.
Steven Taylor (7.5) - A solid game a right back for a player who was filling in. Did well going forward and didn't do too badly on defence either.
Fabricio Coloccini (7.5) - A good response from a star defender. He looked his normal composed self and his partnership with Bassong can be a long term one because they seem to have a good understanding.
Sebastien Bassong (7.5) - He was immense in one on one situations with the Hull attackers. Uses his strength well and was quality in the air.
Jose Enrique (5.5) - He looked as though he was carrying an injury and that kind of held him back during the game. I might be wrong but he wasn't effective today.
Damien Duff (6) - A decent game from Duff. Beat his man well, almost at will sometimes but his final ball could have been better. Good shift from him though. The right wing seems to suit him better too.
Nicky Butt (5.5) - Apart from one chest down for Owen, he had a poor game. Seemed off the pace at times but fair play to him, because his last quarter of the match was probably his best.
Danny Guthrie (8) - He controlled things for us. Was full of energy and he had the better of the Hull midfielders for me. A quality signing whom I'm keen to see for many years at the toon.
Charles N'Zogbia (5) - Didn't look anywhere ner to his best. Went off injured but he gave the ball away at times and just didn't seem effective.
Michael Owen (7) - Missed some good chances but he looked sharp otherwise. The way he ran at the Hull defence in the first half was great to see, while he should have earned us a penalty only for the referee to think otherwise. At least he was much more involved today.
Andy Carroll (6) - Looked a hand full early on, but still looks too raw to play at the top level. He was clumsy while his control was pretty ordinary bar one or two good moments.
Substitutes
Jonas Gutierrez (8) - The way he ran at the Hull right back was great to see and he beat him a lot in the last quarter of the game. Why he didn't start is another thing but he ran himself into the ground when on the field, and he won the ball back in his half about 3 or 4 times and that's commitment. I'll play him from the left against West Ham.
Man of the Match: Danny Guthrie
