Defeat at A.Grove
United were firm favourites with the bookies as they journeyed to North London. Arsenal have been subject to a turbulent period following a string of poor results including the 4-4 home draw against Spurs, defeat at Stoke and a goalless stalemate against Fenerbahce.
However, to their credit, Arsenal responded with a confident display as they edged a 2-1 win over United in a thoroughly entertaining contest at a packed Ashburton Grove.
The game started at a super-fast tempo and United had an early chance to break the deadlock with a close-range free-kick after Almunia bizarrely picked up a back-pass from Mikael Silvestre. The danger was cleared but United threatened again soon afterwards and Wayne Rooney should have done better from twelve yards with the England striker sending a superb move over the crossbar.
Nasri broke the deadlock on 22 minutes with his powerful shot from just outside the box deflecting off Gary Neville before finding its way beyond Edwin van der Sar. The French international was very lively and fired home a superb strike to double the advantage three minutes after the break - picking up a Cecs Fabregas header before smashing home an awesome effort.
United tried to battle back into the game but Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov were left frustrated in attack. Sir Alex Ferguson was perhaps a little slow to introduce Carlos Tevez from the bench and the Reds were lacking a cutting edge in attack which could have got us back into the game sooner.
Rafael, brought on for the disappointing Neville soon after the hour, bagged United's goal with ninety minutes on the clock. The Brazilian hit a lovely volley from the edge of the penalty box - but it wasn't enough to spur on a last-gasp comeback despite the referee adding on some six minutes of injury-time.
Middlesbrough's win at Villa Park means United cling onto the Champions League spots - but wins for Chelsea and the Scousers mean that United sit eight points behind the top two though we do have a crucial game in hand.
