Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Arsenal v Newcastle
By Tyne-talk
August 30 2008
Newcastle United travel to the Emirates Stadium in tonight's 5.30 Kick Off against Arsenal. Unfortunately for Kevin Keegan, Arsene Wenger has announced he has no additional injuries in his side, unlike Keegan who is faced with losing Geremi after he took a blow to the ankle against Coventry on Tuesday night.

So far this season Arsenal have won against West Brom on the opening day of the season and lost against Fulham is last weeks game. Newcastle drew 1-1 with Manchester United on their season opener but beat Bolton 1-0 in last weekends win.

For Arsenal, Theo Walcott and William Galas will feature after both recovering from Knee injuries and Samir Nasri is over a virus.

Arsenal are not without injury though with Rosisky who has a hamstring problem, Silvestre and Diaby who are both struggling with thigh injuries, Eduardo who is yet to recover from his horrific leg injury and Bischoff who has a groin problem.

Keegan's side however is extremely thin on the ground with, Martins, Cacapa, Viduka, Duff, Smith, Carroll and Geremi all injured.

Smith is likely to make the bench once more if not a starting place despite not being fully fit, and Michael Owen is likely to start after being subbed on in mid-week and seeing through the whole of extra time with no problems. Joey Barton could make an appearance, his first this season due to the lack of numbers Keegan has on offer to him.

Keegan is also without midfielder James Milner after his move to Aston Villa this week.

Despite the numerous injuries and departing players Keegan is confident his side can prove their worth as they go into the game a point ahead of Arsenal, and called on their 1-1 draw with Manchester United as a prime example.

Sides

ARSENAL:  Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Walcott, Fabregas, Denilson, Nasri, Adebayor, van Persie, Fabianski, Ramsey, Wilshere, Djourou, Gibbs, Song, Bendtner, Eboue.

NEWCASTLE:  Given, Harper, Beye, N'Zogbia, Taylor, Coloccini, Enrique, Bassong, Tozer, Edgar, Butt, Guthrie, Barton, Jonas, Smith, Owen, Donaldson, Ranger.

Likely Elevens

ARSENAL: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Walcott, Denilson, Fabregas, Nasri, Van Persie, Adebayor.

NEWCASTLE: Given, Beye, Taylor, Coloccini, Enrique, Gutierrez, Butt, Guthrie, N'Zogbia, Smith, Owen.

I've only seen the Beye news on .com, says Edgar will be playing. Also Bassong in with Colccini in midfield.

penalty to arsenal. van persie hammers it in the corner. 1-0 to the gunners, this does NOT look good.

They running us raggered. Ameobi has done sweet little, we may as well have started an extra defender. A hammering is on the cards lads, I'm sorry to say t. Given making some top saves here, while RVP and Fabregas are having a ball of a time.

Arsenal are looking very very good, however we are lookingvery lacing in certain areas, for me we need a top class centre forward aswell as someone who can run and attack players in the centre of midfield. Plus we no longer have anyone at the club I wuld say was a dead ball specialist! I hope we see some proper players come in over the next two days!

Get the cheque book out Ashley - you have 2 days left (after today).

Why wasnt Guthrie tracking back on the second goal?

Get Ameobi off and get one of the kids on.

Not looking good at all, 2-0 down and another injury. They've dominated from start to finish in that half, lucky that Given has made some good saves and that Gallas skied it from 2 yards.

Half time.. 2-0.
I'll be happy if it stays at 2-0 tbh..
Just if I can rant for a minute.. I hate conceding goals 5mins out from halftime.. And we do that a lot..

In the interest of education I thought you all might like to know that 'Shola' is Zulu for 'not premeirship quality'.

Ameobi cannot keep possession, win possession, pass, shoot, or get out of the way of teammates who can perform the above fundamental skills associated with a footballer..

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Arsenal v Newcastle
Yeah all over.. 3-0 isn't so bad (if it stays that way).. I would have been happy with 2-0..
Positives are..
Given has played well (as always)
Jonas and N'Zogbia have played well, Jonas especially.
Guthrie has worked hard.
Owen has played a run on game and looked good..

Negatives with a dash of positive are..
Beye and Butt have had shockers but that's the first time I've said that for awhile..
Collocini and Taylor have been poor, but they have been up against it all game and they look like being a decent combination with time.
Guthrie looked a bit out of his depth with the pace but hasn't exactly had any support from Butt either.

Outright negatives..
Enrique was woeful then got injured..
Ameobi period

Onward and upward.. I think we have enough positives from this game to avoid getting too discouraged..

One thing though.. is our chairman aware that he won't find the name of a 'wow' signing at the bottem of his beverage?

"Hey hey Dennissss, I've drunken sseveen beeerss and everryone only says 'Made in China' at tha bottoom.. Who's he?"

dont forget this was a very weakened newcastle side that had to play extra time against coventry during the week

with geremi , martins, viduka, duff and milner this team was more than capable of getting something

im proud of the lads and we have played 2 of the hardest away games already (Sm13)

Lack of depth showed today, having to play a clearly unfit Ameobi up front with Owen.

But remember before Season started and you were told we would get 4 pts from our first three games, away at Man U and Arsenal and Home to Bolton, wouldnt you have been ecstatic?

Anyway two days to get in another defender, CM and striker.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. We two days and a bit until the transfer window closes and all he can do is drink beer as if he will never have another one. Come on Mike, we need players signed, before days like today become more frequent.

What in the blazes was Danny Guthrie doing?
He's going with his man, stops and watches him run into the box. Then when they score he throws a fit at the defence. The goal could have been prevented if he just kept running with the attacker. We can definitely get in a better midfielder than him.

Gutierrez was our best player out there today I reckon top 4 clubs are eyeing him up already. Colocini did quite well even though we let in three goals. Average performance from Michael Owen and you can tell he was sick and tired of the way we played with look on his face that said that was absolutely pathetic, I can play for a better team, and he definitely won't be here next season.

N'Zogbia's crossing and free kicks must improve, he holds onto the ball too long as well. Habib Beye hasn't looked his usual self recently, perhaps he's feeling the effects of that extra time in midweek.

Nicky Butt played alright to day. The only problem with his game is the fact that he lacks pace. He just couldn't keep up with some of the arsenal players.

I guess we were tired from playing extra time against coventry, and we're up against superior opposition. But I still expected better.

And I almost forgot. Shola Ameobi doesnt' do the job for me. Put the arsenal defence under no pressure whatsoever when they had the ball. Alan Smith would have done a better job. Not to mention getting in the way of Owen's shot. He just didn't have any good movement at all. As a forward you should be getting yourself into space and making runs. Not just standing there and expecting the ball to get to you. The same goes for Michael Owen on that note, not enough movement into space.

The good thing is that there are actual positives to take from this game, the amount of times that we have games like these and get beat by a few goals that we are all just complaining about the performance. But I've got to admit that taking 4 points from August is more than I expected because we could have really struggled, even against Bolton, and with Hull up next at home albeit in 2 weeks and the good possibility that we'll add to the squad this week as well as players coming back from injury the only way is up in my eyes.

Ameobi was woeful like....its just shows how desperate things are at the moment and how thin our squad is.

One week we have almost sold him to championship side Ipswich and shortly after he is starting for us against Arsenal away.

He was just there to make up the numbers really.
