MUFC v NUFC Match Thread
By Tyne-Talk
August 16 2008
Newcastle head to Old Trafford tomorrow in the knowledge that they haven't won a competitive game there since 1972, and have not won a Premier League game there yet. Newcastle's last victory over Manchester United in the league came at St James's Park 13 meetings ago in September 2001.
Newcastle will be without their 2007/2008 leading goal scorer Michael Owen as he continues to struggle with the calf injury which has kept him out of pre-season, and whilst team-mate Obafemi Martins is listed in the line-up, there is no certainty he will start as he recovers from a knee injury which has disrupted his pre-season. Keegan will take his side to Old Trafford knowing that they have won just 25% of games under his management and he will be looking to kick start this season on a high.

As well as Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll are also out injured and Joey Barton has not been included after spending the majority of pre-season in a prison cell.

However, Ameobi is a possibility to start despite still struggling with a hamstring problem and recent reports linking him with an imminent move to Ipswich.

Alan smith will start up front and be hoping he can keep his temper under control to prevent a repeat of his sending off last season in the dying minutes of the game. Keegan said of his goalless striker;

"Alan Smith will score goals at Newcastle United. Once he gets his first one out of the way, they'll come in twos and hopefully threes."

- Let's hope they all hit the back of the net tomorrow!

Newcastle fans will be given the opportunity to welcome the new arrival of Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini and officially recognise Jonas Guiterrez in his first competitive game after a lengthy registration problem, as Keegan has included both in his team.

Nicky Butt, Newcastle United

Keegan has given Nicky Butt the captain's armband in Michael Owen's absence and he is now set to lead his team out against his former team-mates.

Alex Ferguson is without Cristiano Ronaldo who has been spotted more often limping around LA as opposed to Manchester during the pre-season after an operation on his ankle after suffering with Os Trigonum Syndrome. Nani will miss the match through suspension, Anderson is on Olympic duty and Owen Hargreaves is still recovering from a knee injury, however Wayne Rooney has recovered from a virus and will make the starting eleven alongside Tevez.

Keegan will be looking for a more positive result rather than a repeat of last year's corresponding game which saw Newcastle concede 6 goals and fail to score.

Manchester United: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Neville, Brown, R Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, O'Shea, Evans, Evra, Silvestre, F Da Silva, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Gibson, Possebon, Giggs, Martin, Tevez, Rooney, Campbell.

Newcastle United: Given, Beye, N'Zogbia, Taylor, Coloccini, Enrique, Cacapa, Bassong, Edgar, Butt, Geremi, Milner, Duff, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Martins, Smith, Edgar, Harper.

looks like Martins will be back which the only bright spark up front. Looks like he and duff or smith will start up front.

Colo and Taylor in the middle. Still gonna lose 3-0 though.

I'd have to second that comment. Just think realistically we cannot expect anything from today.

I think our starting line up will be

Given
Beye Coloccini Taylor Enrique
Milner Butt Guthrie Jonas
Duff Martins

Unfortunately I won't be able to catch the whole game, but will be following the result when I can.

Howay the lads!

I'm bracing myself for the pain (Sm128)

Less than 5 goals conceded would be nice.

I have feeling we will be unlucky. 2-1 loss.

We have the makings of a very decent squad, we need time that's all.

I like the pace, passing needs a little work and the less said about the defending . . . Thank goddness for the plucky Irishman in goal as well. Much better than I was expecting.

Re: MUFC v NUFC Match Thread
We were down to 10 men when they scored.. taylor was on sidelines getting treatment.

It will take time (games) for Colo to settle but we need a LB. If Enrique is not good enough then we have to buy..NZog is not a LB!!

We had some luck (for a change) but well played first half
(Sm53)

Re: MUFC v NUFC Match Thread
Much better. It has to be said that we're quite fortunate to be one of the sides that get to face MUFC sans Ronaldo. I have very little doubt that he would have turned in one if not both of the free kicks Giggs took.

Coloccini is getting settled in, to be flattering. Can't judge him yet. I wonder if we'll see Edgar or Bassong subbed in during the second half. Defending in general has been shaky at times with Beye turning in the most convincing performance, as usual. Fletcher's goal (23') came due to a failure to pick up the second wave of a MUFC break-out, a problem I've observed in our back four over a couple of seasons. Thank whatever supreme being you prefer for the continued enormous presence of Given, who turned aside a 6-yard header from Fraiser Campbell and encored with a double save from Rooney and Fetcher later in the half.

The buildup is smooth and short passing/running off the ball are much improved. Guthrie and Gutierrez have impressed, always running. Martins' goal (21') from a (Guthrie?) corner was class. It's encouraging to see us getting results from set pieces (we've threatened from others). That was not typical last season.

If the defense can settle and the forwards and midfield give more of the same, we can get at least a point out of this game. HOWAY THE LADS!!!!!

Great result, shakey start but we got better as the game went on. Gutierrez is a legend in the making, if he keeps playing like that.

Colo did`nt look arf bad too. Looks like the summer signings have passed the first test.

You could see there was a real team mentality about newcastle! Cant wait to watch the next game!

I am so pleased with this result.

and a major plus... look at the signings we brought in.

Danny.. Solid, Made few errors. Great Singing.

Jonas... superb. Both going forward and Back. Should of had a free kick after that bobby dazzler of a run. Great Singing.

Colo... a couple of small mistakes to start with. This was his first game in the EPL and he was solid. Good in. Great Singing.

Bassong... Didn't play.

Who can possibly criticise our recruitment team when they are clearly holding out for Gems like these??????
