Keegan "Its a great start"
By Tyne-Talk July 20 2008
Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has made it clear to club owner Mike Ashley that to improve on last season he will need more players added to his small squad. After watching his team beat Hartlepool in the 1st of several preseason friendlies, Keegan updated NUFCTV on the current situation at the club.

The line up was as follows:

Shay Given, David Edgar, Jose Enrique, Steven Taylor, Claudio Cacapa, Damien Duff, James Milner, Nicky Butt (c), Charles N'Zogbia, Oba Martins and Alan Smith with Fraser Forster, Danny Guthrie, Shola Ameobi, Frank Wiafe Danquah, Ben Tozer, Callum Morris, Mark Doninger, Jonny Godsmark and Darren Lough, all on the bench.

Damian Duff who just weeks ago appeared to be on the verge of leaving Newcastle, netted 3 of the 4 goals Newcastle scored, with new signing Danny Guthrie also hitting the back of the net.

Keegan told NUFCTV:

"There's definitely got to be more signings in the pipeline and I've told the owner. We only had two players with us on the sidelines that I would call senior players - which takes us to 12. Michael [Owen] had a sore one so we had to pull him, but he'll return on Monday, and we're missing Mark Viduka."

Speaking of new signing Jonas Gutierrez Keegan confirmed the registration is yet to come through.

"The Spiderman's registration still hasn't come through, but we're like a lot of clubs, waiting for something to happen in the market.

We'll definitely be in before the end of the window because we just can't go into the transfer market with this small squad.

Everyone's working hard, we'll see what happens.

Guthrie is a typical Liverpool player. He passes the ball really well and you don't see him give the ball away too often,

I think within five minutes of coming on he had created a goal and scored a goal so it's a great start."

On Damien Duff's performance Keegan said:

"He looks very sharp. It's the first time in three or four years that he has had a pre-season.

He has missed all pre-season training in the last three and any pro will tell you, that is of major importance to get that in because it gives you a base for the season.

He has looked very sharp. He says his weight is down to what it was when he was 17, 18, and he looked like a 17 or 18-year-old out there.

He was very good and the three goals were nice to see. He has worked very, very hard, as have all the players."

Re: Keegan "Its a great start"
1. It would be much more assuring for KK to say "there's definitely more signings in the pipeline"

2. Can we please stop referring to him as 'Spiderman'? He's a grown man; it's a bit ridiculous-especially when there's no obvious reason for the nickname, anyway.

Rant over.

Actually the nickname comes from him donning a spiderman mask when he scores a goal. Still it is pretty silly.

Yeah, I know CND-thing is, he hasn't scored that much recently. If it weren't for the youtube videos, we'd have no idea why he's called 'Spiderman.'
