A statement on the Fenerbahce official club website read:
"Fenerbahce reached an agreement with Newcastle United in order to sign the Turkish superstar Emre Belozoglu."
And confirmation was also given on their television network FPTV.
The 27 year old Turkish international was released by Newcastle United prior to the end of the 2007/2008 Premier League season enabling him to link up early with the Turkish side In preparation for the Euro 2008 campaign, a move which was considered odd by many fans considering he was said to be still recovering from an injury.
At the time manager Kevin Keegan said:
"A lot of people say Emre has been unsettled but I don't see an unsettled player here. I see a player who is obviously very keen to play in Euro 2008, which he will for Turkey.
If he doesn't play in the next two weeks, I'll let him go a week early to their training camp. I don't want to keep him here if he's not going to be involved and, with the way the team are playing, that may be the case."
He also said at the beginning of the month, with regards to transfers:
"We might lose one or two.To be honest it might be in everybody's interest that they go. We might lose one or two we don't want to go."
It now looks like Emre may not return from his home country as a 3 year deal worth approximately €5Million, appears to have been announced.
In an interview yesterday Emre said:
"Newcastle have good players and finished the season with a good mentality. They are playing football again. When Kevin came to Newcastle everybody felt he had brought something different from in the dressing room to out on the pitch.
Everything has changed for the better because of him."
There has been no word from Newcastle United on the transfer.
