Today's reports suggest that Liverpool's Walton Prison is full to the brink and for Barton's own safety he is likely to be transferred to a southern open prison the location of which hasn't been disclosed.
A prison source said:
"He came to Liverpool and was kept on J-wing, which is very small and only takes 60-prisoners.
Staff were conscious of the fact that they needed to get him away before the bank holiday weekend.
The thinking is that if they send him outside the area he may be safer because less people know him, but he is a Premier League footballer.
Some prisoners might try to make a name for themselves having a famous footballer alongside them.
It might not be a happy period for him. Just because he's a footballer doesn't mean he'll be treated different to the rest."
Should the 25 year old be released just 2 months into a 6 month sentence it is likely he will be tagged with conditions in place.
Fan forums show fans are split over whether or not they want to see the £50,000 a week player at the club next season and there has been a high profile media campaign launched over the last week calling for him to be banned from playing at all.
Former Newcastle player Rob Lee believes Kevin Keegan will back Joey whilst Malcolm MacDonald is not so sure.
Lee told the BBC:
"I think some clubs would sack Joey, but I think Kevin Keegan will back him,"
Whilst MacDonald told The Sun:
"I don't think he has a future at Newcastle. He has to move on. It will be the last throw of the dice for him."
The club are yet to comment on Barton's future but released the following statement on the 20/5/2008 once news of his conviction had been announced.
"Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.
The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."
