Barton Jailed - Club Statement
By Tyne-Talk May 20 2008
Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been convicted for 6 months after admitting assault and affray relating to an incident on 27th December 2007 in Liverpool’s city centre. Barton was initially refused bail. He was remanded in custody and was only granted bail on the third attempt.

At that point he was training with the club but wasn’t allowed to play until the conditions were changed in mid January. He was also adhering to a curfew which meant he had to return to a Hampshire clinic owned by Tony Adams where he was being treated for alcohol addiction.

He is now unlikely to feature for Newcastle United before Christmas, if at all. The club will need to reassess their options.

The released the following statement:

"Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.

The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."
